I have been in a relationship with a black man for almost a year. I told my parents & grandmother after 6 months. They were mean &hateful. My grandma said "God made everyone a different color so they'd stay together." I don't think that's true. I have so much faith in my relationship. It's just so hard not having my families support. Im 19 & still live at home. All I have is faith &the love of my boyfriend to keep me going. When will I be able to be fully happy.

We shall overcome! They were likely raised in a different era when ideas about race were different. The shade of someones skin is insignificant, what matters is their character.

Some people are just that way, and it is really sad.
There is absolutely no biblical support that says God made people of a different color so they's stay together. The bible never mentions that we cannot mix races either. Do not let their racism cloud your judgement. What you should look for is a Godly man. No matter his color.
Hang in there, have faith things will get better.

I tell my girls that I want them to look for a man who loves God more than anything else...including them! If he does, everything else will fall into place. If he is a man who loves the Lord, you are blessed. Your family will get to know him and realize this in time. If not, you may have to set some difficult boundaries with them. They must not be allowed to make racial comments of any sort. It is not acceptable. Pray about it. If you love him this much, I am sure they will learn to love him, as well.

Absolutely agree with what he said. Take his words and just think about that. Man may look at outward appearances but the Lord looks at the heart. So if you know he has an excellent heart and a desire to be Christ-like, then it should never matter. Don't fear the opinion after that.

It is very hard to overcome prejudices that we grow up with....be patient with your family but don't allow them to be rude to your boyfriend. Lulabelle said it very well! God doesn't look at the outward appearance; He looks at the heart.

Onlyfaith23,

God does look on the heart, not the outward appearance.
However, the two of you need to be realistic, and recognize that these issues of racism in your family (and maybe throughout your geographical area) may NOT change.

You both need to be aware of this, and realistic about it, and willing to deal with it.
It may not get better.
It may not change.
Just be sure you're both ready, and willing, to deal with these things for the long haul.

If you are both mature enough to be realistic about these racism issues, which YOU can't change...
then you are both mature enough to go forward, and face them.
: )

God Bless,
Max

"Let me tell you something, when you're alone late at night in bed just you and her under the covers, that's all that matters. You gotta do what your heart tells you to do. Let me tell you something' right now. You're only allowed three great women in your lifetime. They come along like the great fighters, every ten years. Rocky Marciano, Sugar Ray Robinson, Joe Louis. Sometimes you get'em all at once. Me? I had my three when i was 16. That happens. What are you gonna do? That's the way it goes, you know? Tell you right now. See this girl? Maybe this girl, she put wind in your sails. Maybe she's your first great one."

...Maxwel is very right as well, my mother is Italian and my father is Black and they would always get looks from people. But never stopped them from being together.

My prayers to you both. If God has put you two together, then go with God and know you are where you should be. Some people will never agree with it but you have to know your hearts and God's blessings are on your side.

"I've known several mixed race marriages in my time, and they usually seem to do quite well. I don't know why. Perhaps it's because is requires that extra bit of effort on both parts. More understanding than most marriages seem to generate."
(Paraphrased from Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, one of my all time favorite movies. ) Some really brilliant dialogue.

If you both are Christians, then there shouldn't be a problem. I would be more concerned if any of my children came home and told me they had a unbeliever for a boyfriend. However, make sure if you are Christians, you walk the walk and do not sin with your boyfriend. If you are not born again believers yet, then strive for that.

I live in the south and over the last 20 years, I have seen many prejudiced white families feel at first that their daughter has betrayed them by marrying a black man.
And most of those families have their hearts changed to some degree about black people, once the grand-babies come along.
Sometimes the relationship lasts and sometimes it doesn't, but the white grandparents can still be seen loving their mixed grand-children either way. It seems to almost force the racism out of them.
Granted, they consider the child to be 51% white in order to deal with their own issues. And granted, they think they can affect the mixed child to be "whiter" rather than "blacker"
Still their hearts are softened. Maybe hardened in another way, but racism is the perpetrator's error and they are the ones that answer for it.

I can't speak about the mentalities of the black grandparents, because while I know many white grandparents that have mixed babies, I don't personally know many black grandparents of mixed babies.

My uncle has changed drastically from his years in his 20's where he thought he was a klan member, to now in his 50's, having a friend with a mixed child and watching that boy grow up into a very respectable and fine young man - mixed teenager.

Eventually, your parents will have to force themselves to come around in their heart, or they will have to cut you off at their own loss.
You are not breaking the 5th commandment by marrying a black guy against their wishes.
The word underneath "honor" there means to very heavily consider their opinion, not blindly obey.
They can still be wrong.

I also see a reverse effect in this in my town, white girls marrying black guys because they are "negatively racist"
When a white girl likes a black guy, then they break up, and she continues to only like black guy after black guy, it's because she is in love with "black" not the guy. Same with the black guys that exclusively date white girls.
If it were really about the person on the inside, there would be some "going back" to be witnessed, but I never see that.
Sadly most mixed couples appear to be fads.
But there is nothing wrong with mixing if it's about the person under the skin.

On another level, rampant modern mixed couples, black guy - white girl are symbolic of Christ and His bride.
In this day and age, Christ is "hidden" in "darkness" and His bride is a pure "white" light of the world.
You can have that for some comfort.

Peace sis!

I agree with your parents.

The races should be kept separate. There are so many verses in the bible about Israel being kept separate from other races as they would be led into idolatry as was Soloman

God made everything to reproduce after his own kind.Kind means type and color

Deut 23.2

No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any ot their descendants may enter the assembly of the Lord even to the tenth generation.

Good to see people still use the misuse the bible to support racism. Now, before you burn a cross, make sure to put on your white hood.

Aren't you the politically correct one! READ YOUR BIBLE

Ezra 9.2
The lsraelite men and their son's have married these women. They have mixed the people who belong to God with the people around them.

Ezra 10.2
We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying women from the people's around us.

Ezra10.3
We will send away all these women and their children as you command

Nothing's changed.God still requires Israel to be separate

The outsiders they were marrying were pagan cultures who didn't serve the one true God. They worshipped idols and killed their children in the fires to the false god Molech. THIS is why they weren't to marry. All the people in that region looked alike anyhow. Read Your Bible. :D
