Last night I was cutting up some veggies to make a salad for dinner for my bf and I. Little did I know, he's a fanatic knife sharpener. I cut right through the top of my finger. It stung a little bit but right way I knew it was stitches worthy. Pretty deep, probably a 1/4 deep. I'm usually the first to hop to it in an emergency and I had no idea what to do beyond grabbing a paper towel since it was bleeding so badly. So my bf went paramedic on me. Compressed it, washed it, put on the neosporin, and bandaged it like a pro. I was starting to black out and I felt like an idiot. I mean i cut my finger. Apparently he noticed, walked me to the couch, and threw an ice pack on my head. How the heck can you black out from a finger cut?!

some people faint at the sight of their own blood. they are great with everyone else during an emergency but sometimes its just the shock. Thank God your bf knew what to do :)

did you have to get stitches?

Chances are your title is the explanation. Sounds like you may have gone into some mild shock. If you cut that deep it may have hit bone. Any serious wound can lead to shock, just because its 'just a finger cut' doesn't mean it's not serious.

I've seen myself bleed before. I guess it just wasn't ever that much. I should have gotten stitches but I have no insurance. I'm lucky though that my bf does construction for Kaiser Permanente so he's all up to date on his first aid.

Awful...I remember cutting with a sharp knife through my thumb cutting bread....only knew coz bread went all red...felt a bit yuck. ( midwife = expect better) The there was the sardine can incident...i will not elaborate :) stitches involved but prior there was great hilarity as my hand became a puppet...with large 'mouth'.....eeek!!!! ...sounds like you have a competent, calm-in-a- crisis kinda guy! he's a keeper :) <><

My wife and I were there that afternoon after a pastor's wife cut off a half inch of finger trimming her hedges that morning. We just prayed, and of course it grew back. It's good to know about those kind of things when you get such a shock.

Lets just be glad you weren't trimming your own hair...
or you'd be the poor little headless girl.

Shock is often more mental than physical. As a firefighter I could stand all the gore in the world - as long as it wasn't mine. Guts spread across the hiway? No problem. Slice my finger open? You better believe I'm headed for that couch, if I don't spin out before I get there :) It's a good thing your bf knows his first aid, I would suggest that maybe you should know a little too.

As a sidenote I did the same thing at work, without the passing out part, and super glue makes for fantastic stitches if you dont have insurance and the cuts isnt terribly serious

Lot's o' nerves ina hand... might been that you "swooned" out of pain overload. You body may have already turned off that channel, but the signal hadn't stopped so the week in the knees moment was the substitute to feeling more pain than you were ready to feel.
one option, not necessarily what happened.

Glad you're okay now, Jordache. Personally, I'd have fainted. I'm not good with blood (more my own than other people's).

glad your ok. you said in another thread that you was having eating disorders, I wonder if this faint had anything to do with that. lack of food will cause me to almost faint, but I have hypoglycemia. sometimes I get so low on my sugar that I start to dry heave. It's really stupid and gives me a yuk feeling, as if I'm so hungry I need to eat but I'm afraid to cause my tummy feels bad.
Again, I'm glad your doing ok. Glad he was there to help you.
