Do you (or will you) tell your little kids about him? I think my wife and I will tell our kids. No harm in a little imagination and fantasy. All kids eventually find out it's not real. I figured it out when I was 7. But my parents really stretched the fun to make it seem more "realistic". They said it wasn't always the same Santa. They said that one retires when he gets too old and looks for a new one to take his place but not just anyone could be Santa. The candidate must be Dutch, must be Christian, must be named Nicholas, must speak at least 100 languages fluently, and must have the Christmas spirit in his heart all year long and if he has kids, they must be grown up. That's what we'll do when our daughter is born. That's what my oldest sister told our nieces.

Do you really think God will overlook your little lie to your children?? Do you not know what God said about one that maketh a lie??

Do you really choose to harm one of the little ones by lying to them??

Matthew 18:6 (KJV)
6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Mark 9:42 (KJV)
42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.
Luke 17:2 (KJV)
2 It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.

Psalm 52:1-5 (KJV)
1 Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.
2 Thy tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.
3 Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.
4 Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.
5 God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.

Psalm 101:7-8 (KJV)
7 He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight.
8 I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all wicked doers from the city of the LORD.

Proverbs 6:16-19 (KJV)
16 These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
17 A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Proverbs 12:22 (KJV)
22Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight.

Proverbs 13:5 (KJV)
5 A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame.

Proverbs 14:5 (KJV)
5 A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

Proverbs 14:25 (KJV)
25 A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.

Proverbs 19:5 (KJV)
5 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.

Proverbs 19:9 (KJV)
9 A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Isaiah 59:1-4 (KJV)
1 Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.
3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.
4 None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

Jeremiah 7:8-9 (KJV)
8 Behold, ye trust in lying words, that cannot profit.
9 Will ye steal, murder, and commit adultery, and swear falsely, and burn incense unto Baal, and walk after other gods whom ye know not;

Jonah 2:8 (KJV)
8 They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

John 8:44 (KJV)
44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Ephesians 4:25 (KJV)
25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

1 Timothy 4:1-2 (KJV)
1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;
2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

1 John 2:21 (KJV)
21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

Revelation 21:27 (KJV)
27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Revelation 22:12-15 (KJV)
12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.
15 For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

Hebrews 3:12 (KJV)
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Romans 14:11-12 (KJV)
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

Matthew 12:36-37 (KJV)
36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

Today the original post was awesome.
You think the original post was awesome??? You think lying to children is ok?? Do you really think God will except such a lie? Did you not read what God had to say about those that lie?? Do you think God was just kidding when he said those things??

May God have mercy on all that will lie to a child about anything, let alone lie to anyone!

There are two liinks on the bottom of my first post in this thread take a look at them, that you may get a better understanding about how bad this lie about santa (satan) really is.

Oh please, as long as they know what Christmas is really about and what the having the Christmas spirit is then what's the harm in having a little fun? What do you do when your kids pretend to be something when they play, jump down their throats about lying?

I am no sent but to share the truth of God's word. If you desire to believe its ok to lie in the name of having a little fun and refuse to hear and obey what God has said, that is your choice. God did give man freedom of choice, but remember we all have to answer to God one day for the choices we have made.
I did the same thing with my children and today I have no relationship with them all because I chose to live lies with my children. I have since come to know the LORD and now serve God with my whole heart and soul in all honesty, but it will never change what I did to my children through seamingly harmless lies.

Man, these Christmas/Santa posts are always so cantankerous and virulent. Nothing good comes out of any of them. You always have half raging about lies and paganism, and always one person that says 'satan claus'. Then the other half say it doesn't matter. And its just and endless back and forth.

yeah as soon as someone relates santa(which actually just means saint) to satan, they lose credibility and I view as the Church Lady from the old Dana Carvey SNL skits.

Just tell the kids the truth. That Santa Claus was based upon a man who used to be alive.

he loved orphan children and would fill a sack of toys to give to them because of the love he felt for them and then world have since built stories about him. some of them are far fetched and some of them are just pretend but they are stories like the nursery rhymes with the cow jumping over the moon or such. then talk to them about how true things can be changed in the retelling.

if you have a group of kids play the telephone game with them and show them how a rumor can change from a true statement to a false one and how spreading rumors can hurt.

I take the whole Santa thing as an educational opportunity and then continue to talk about what Christmas and about Jesus because any time of the year is a good time to celebrate Jesus...

and before anyone goes into a rant about Jesus TRUE day of birth perhaps people should reread scriptures ...

Colossians 2:15-17

New King James Version (NKJV)

15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.
16 So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, 17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.

personally i didn't grow up believing in Santa Claus. however its traditional for my husband's family to do it. so the presents from "santa" are things we normally can't afford but we tell the kids to thank God for them.

truthfully i don't like the idea of kids being good only to get gifts from "Santa" once a year. I'd rather them choose to be good because its the right thing to do and you will see most kids pay attention more to the adults in their lives and how they act around christmas time than the stories of Santa.

My kids ask me what I want for Christmas and I tell them just to be with them is enough and that things fade away, get broken and thrown away but family and friends and spending time with each other is more important.

as a kid i didn't understand that but that is the beauty of growing up and learning to walk with the Holy Spirit.

no matter how you try and shelter your kids, its not until they have their own personal relationship with God that the words will mean more then just noise cymbals.

if you act so mean and nasty about Santa Claus who in the beginning was just a man who wanted to give to orphans presents and gifts out of love, then what message are you really sending?

Its not just WHAT you teach it HOW and WHY you teach it.

James 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.

No, I thought long and hard about all these issues before I had children. I felt it was vital to always tell the truth to my children, if I expected them to be honest in return. I imagine they do figure it out eventually but at what cost?
We talked about the story of Santa Claus and also about St. Nicholas where it came from. They always knew he was not a real person, but they still loved the holidays and still do. Christmas is all about the birth of Christ in our home.

Here's an alternative to Satan Claus. I know some friends of mine who has children, one that is about the age to where he's getting old enough to be aware of Santa Claus. Anyway, what they decided to do was purchase something, similar to the "Elf on the Shelf" and create a tradition where every night, they use the toy in someone to tell Biblical stories that relate to Christmas, both from the OT and NT. This way they can keep the true meaning of Christmas off of Santa and onto the true purpose.

I underestand your question very well, because I myself have two little kids. So I know the fight inside of me if to say the truth or not. You, actually have even bigger problem than I do.Althogh we already have shopwindows full of Santas, Santa Claus is not traditional Christmas character in my country. In our tradition it is Jesus or rather baby Jesus who brings the presents. Well, it sounds and looks more closer to the original Christian reason for celebrating Christmass. But I still try to find right answer for this question. Still it is a lie to say it is Him and still Christmass used to be a celebration of solstice not Jesus' birth.
Santa Claus is a problem. The name is really based on a real person. Nicolas was early ancient Macedonian priest and missionary, the liegend tells he gaved presents to pure children. But some of the historical sources show, that he was also quite harsh. And by the way, the red clothed old man, that is Saint NIcolas only by his name. It is some Scandinavian Troll or Elf or something like that.

An alternative approach:

Since the person of Saint Nick was a real, living human being who existed in history, you could have your kids leave out their shoes (or stocking on the mantle) and fill it with treats/small gifts on December 6th, which is St. Nick's day. This is actually a popular custom in a few European nations. This custom, being so close to the celebration of Christmas, over time led to a merging of the two...so the Dec 6th custom kinda got thrown in with the Dec 25th one to produce our modern Santa Claus.

You're children can still grow up with an appreciation for the awe and wonder that childhood carries with it by educating them about Nicholas of Myra and his life, and how maybe they might get a treat too. Then, on Christmass, you can forgo the Santa Claus thing altogether if you are concerned that they will mistake gifts from Santa as permission to worship Mammon.

Yes, Custos_Clavium... But do you know the tradition of 5th December Night? I know it, because it is still living tradition in the Czech Republic. St. Nicolas doesn't put the gifts in a stocking. He comes personally accompained with an angel and a devil(of course people dressed for these three) to children asking them if they were good for whole the year. The kids have to say a poem or sing a song to them and than they get a small present - usually some fruit, sweets or just small toys. In this case he is not dressed in red coat but more like a Catholic priest.

We told our kids that all daddy's are santa and all mommy's are tooth fairies. Not only is it true but there is still room for magic and mystery. :) Merry Christmas!!

best post yet, ding ding we have a winner!! the real person Santa clause is based on was actually a bishop, and very much believed in God, I'm waiting for someone to start a post on how the cow jumping over the moon,is based on witchcraft, you know someone will
