If I were in this situation, I would NEVER think about hitting my kids in any way. That's just mean and wrong. I've also heard some people say that ignoring bad, petty behavior and praising good behavior is the way to go. Punishment gives kids the attention they might want, so it could actually make them even more likely to repeat that behavior.

....if you ever have kids tell me how that works out for you....

Young children don't understand a conversation, you may have to tap their hand or their bottom. You will not cause them physical harm if there is no mark or bruise. Once my child was running around a campfire when I kept saying not to. Finally I spanked their but and they quit.

Children who are well fed on positive attention do not seek negetive attention. But if they are starved, to them negetive attention is better than no attention at all. So yeah, in that cause they will be bad on purpose. Spend time with them so they never get to that point- no matter how old they are.
