Many start the race but it takes endurance to finish.

Falling away from the Christ is unfortunately very common. I believe the perfect parallel is one who wants to lose weight and get in shape. Those who aren't fully dedicate will slowly get back into bad habits, compromising with themselves when it comes to exercise. They will slowly start eating the wrong foods and increase their portions. Eventually the "self" in them will overcome the desire in themselves to be their best, look their best, and feel there best. They simply quit.

Many start the race but few press on to finish.

Scripture can summaries it this way,

(Hebrews 12:1) Therefore, since we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,....

St. Paul to the Philippians (3:14) "I press on toward the goal to attain the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

So let us challenge our loved ones' who are falling away, that much will be lost if they give up, but much will be gained if they just keep pressing on.

1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

Not all have God's Spirit but are trying in their own flesh.(strength)

That is great wisdom and a scripture that I cant recall reading. The last part I don't understand, "they might be made manifest that they were not all of us."

I cant wrap my head around the "not all of us". is that in reference (all) as a "group" or (all) as a quantitative "measure" of our self.

I think it is saying 'not all that were with us, were of us'.

Proverbs 22:6 is our responsibility here.
