Well, I just ruled out "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People. That particular song lyrics seem to depict a school shooting apparently??? :( :( :(
From the lead singer:
Foster said in a statement to CNN.com, "I wrote 'Pumped Up Kicks' when I began to read about the growing trend in teenage mental illness. I wanted to understand the psychology behind it because it was foreign to me. It was terrifying how mental illness among youth had skyrocketed in the last decade. I was scared to see where the pattern was headed if we didn't start changing the way we were bringing up the next generation."[SUP][7][/SUP] In writing the song, Foster wanted to "get inside the head of an isolated, psychotic kid"[SUP][4][/SUP] and "bring awareness" to the issue of gun violence amongst youth, which he feels is an epidemic perpetuated by "lack of family, lack of love, and isolation."[SUP][8][/SUP][SUP][9][/SUP] The song's title refers toshoes that the narrator's peers wear as a status symbol.

"The song is not about condoning violence at all. It's the complete opposite. The song is an amazing platform to have a conversation with your kids about something that shouldn't be ignored, to talk about it in a loving way."

I am so glad to hear this...that you will not have a new list of songs and singers to ask the same question in the future. Praise GOD...it only shows that it was not needed to begin with. But..if your attitude regarding how you respond when you put it for all to see, does not improve...don't worry about what kind of music you listen to...ask "GOD, am I able to give YOU the glory for this and not fly off the handle when a responder's answer does not line up with my way of thinking?"

On the Leona Lewis train this might be my favorite, it was also one of the themes from the ads on FF13

Yeah when I was listening and thinking about God, I was think about God's hands and my hands, not letting go.

What about you?

I have been listening to and playing rock music for most of my life, including having a pretty good career playing rock guitar and bass professionally. For the last few years I have mostly been playing praise and worship at my church.

Most of my devotions are musical----praise and worship, as well as contemporary Christian music. When I'm listening or playing these, I feel an incredible fellowship with the Lord. So I do it a lot.

At the same time, I also enjoy secular music. It's just something I do for fun, for entertainment, for a change so that I can reapproach the music I'm playing at church having been, for lack of a better term, musically refreshed. I've been doing this a long enough time to know that if I pigeonhole myself into one kind of music, my musical worship to the Lord becomes a bit dulled. And I'm sure He doesn't want that.

I guess I look at it as I would any other activity that one wouldn't think directly involves the Lord, for instance, something like playing a game of cards with my family or watching Jeopardy on television, because really in all things I feel like I'm fellowshipping with Him anyway. I find myself frequently thanking Him for the blessing of whatever it is I just enjoyed, or am about to enjoy, or whatever. Sometimes I'm just thanking Him for relieving me of the bondage of sin for that time so that I can enjoy whatever it is or was, because when my mind is on sinning, the joy of doing these good things is reduced or removed entirely.

For me, the make it or break it question becomes: Does this thing tear down, make fun of, or otherwise go against my Christian faith? If it does, forget it...I'm outta there! Otherwise, go enjoy yourself! He certainly doesn't want the best in life to go just to the world. He came that we might have life more abundantly. And because we belong to Him, it is my experience that our joy in these things eclipses that of non-believers. So praise God that we are His.

Thanks WeavinSteven for sharing that refreshing insight! :)

So true "praise God that we are His"!

This is totally based on you and how you feel. There's no scripture that says " Thou shalt not listenth to this music."

I personally don't listen to secular music because of what it gets my mind on. Not that all the messages are bad, just they make me think of the world and less of God. Even the positive like secular songs focus more on what I can do, what I feel, what I think, how I can change the world. There is a scripture for your minds like, "So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace." Lord know I need more peace in my life.

So I listen to Christian music only for this reason (this being to focus more on God) and been working on media as well...which has been a killer for me :/ This is one of those things between you and God. Working out your own salvation with fear and trembling

I listen to a lot of non-christian music that I still manage to hear God speaking to me through. I'm usually into heavier genres, and lately I've been listening to soulfly a lot. They like to drop the F-bomb, sometimes more frequently than others, and even though they're not "christian" the lead singer is very devout in his beliefs of God and Jesus Christ, and actually says thanks and praise to him in the liner notes on every album. While they may lean towards foul language at times I still find them very spiritually uplifting and empowering.

I also listen to The Who and Led Zeppelin a lot. Again, not christian bands, but I can still find some kind of spiritual meaning in their music that resonates with me. Particularly in In My Time of Dying, and Bargain

Hi Anneliese,

Couldn't help listening to each one of your music in your playlist. There isn't anything offensive I could find, but it sounds like you have a vigilant mind and the songs seem to have positive lyrics.

ps: Not sure about the Owl Eye version of Pump Up Kicks. Sounds out of tune :p

Thanks for sharing!

Don't really see any issues with those songs. I listen to just about anything. Just because you listen to secular music doesn't mean you have to take lyrics to heart. Some songs I like have terrible lyrics but amazing melodies and beats.
