I'm having a heated discussion on another forum regarding Christian death metal. They believe it is worship music, but I feel it to be very negative. How can screaming aggressively continuously, along with overly loud heavy guitar and drums be heard as worship material? It is too angry and nasty. I feel it is bad for the soul and makes people angry and considering some of their answers using caps letters along with bad attitude it seems to definitely have had an affect on them :/

I reckon I judge music by IF it could be seen being sung/played in Heaven before the same Throne that Ezekiel and John saw in the Revelation ... as well as our physical response to any particular music.

I like 'music' that is reverential and points more to His Glory then those that point at myself or a human's ability to use their own innate 'talent' that seems to point more to themselves than to bring you into His actual Presence. The type that we'd expect to hear in Heaven by what we read in His Word.

But at the same time - I have heard even a few rap songs that point us in the right direction for our lives.

I've also seen where music turns into just the boogying down dancing that I used to do in the clubs B.C..

Just can't see that before His Throne.

I suppose I should have put this on the thread about what kind of music do we like. Oh vell! :)

I don't listen to metal bands. To me, that is NOT music!! It's clearly and obviously NOISE POLLUTION. LOL!!!!!! :) You're right, it does sound too nasty and angry.

Right. It's all the musics fault. Not anything else in their life. That's logical. *rolls eyes.

That's because you're looking at the scenario under a bad light.
2 Samuel 6:13-15

"And so it was, that when the bearers of the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. And David was dancing before the LORD with all his might, and David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouting and the sound of the trumpet."

If the Israelites rejoiced this much at the entrance of the Ark, just imagine how much greater the celebration will be in front of our Lord! I think it's safe to say that "boogying" is expected to occur in heaven :)

Thanks for your opinions. I've had to bow out of the discussion on the other forum as it's not getting anywhere other than a ping pong match! I just can't see how Christian Thrash Death Metal with all the constant screaming, shouting and growling can be good for the soul. I pointed out scripture, mostly Psalms and Proverbs where we are to be joyful when praising and worshiping. I gave the definition of Joyful and screaming, shouting nor growling were in there. Also a verse in James that says something along the lines that human anger is displeasing to our Heavenly Father.

On boogying, why not? David danced, the scriptures tell us many times to enjoy, be merry and have a good righteous time!

I like music that is emotional but to constantly scream is just destructive all round..

I imagine God judges the intent while we judge the content. If it's (the music) genuinely and sincerely meant to be God honoring, more power to them.

I just quoted that verse! haha. Interestingly the verse says "shouting" as a way to express joy. From this I can assume has it's place in worship before our Lord :D

So it seems some believe that thrash death metal used with lyrics that are biblical can be acceptable as worship material? Even with the continuous screaming and growling? I would think a shout out here and there seems ok, but don't you think the energy coming out of such a sound as angry as Christian thrash death metal has a bad feel to it?
Can you sound nasty and aggressive when worshiping? Emotions of anger are created with this music, that's what I'm getting at. Scriptures warn us not to be angry so then why would we choose such an emotion when worshiping? o_O and what kind of witness does that illustrate to unbelievers??

We can all intend to do things but what good are intentions without action? In a song that screams out with violent attitude constantly but is about praising our Creator the intentions don't follow on with the correct action as far as I can see. I could intend to not steal something but then do it in a moment, do I get judged on my intention, or on my action?I
could intend to be peaceful and gentle but then go about screaming aggressively at people, or to the heavens, what do I get judged on?

>don't you think the energy coming....
no. this problem is entirely subjective.

>can you sound nasty and aggressive when worshipping?
yes, as evidenced by Jesus driving out the merchants during Passover, worship can even be aggressive

>emotions of anger are created with this music
again, entirely subjective. I feel passion and zealous affection, not anger.

>what kind of witness does that illustrate to nonbelievers?
an unbiased one.

lyrics grounded in scripture are not at all necessarily all luvvy-dovey & serene & full of warm, fuzzy feelings. the same Jesus that spoke compassionately to lepers flipped over the moneytables in the temple and called the priests a den of vipers and sons of the devil.

To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.
(Proverbs 8:13)

try setting OT prophecy to music, and i don't think you'll get far before you see how a bombastic and aggressive tone reflects the subject. a time & season for everything -- i'm not suggesting unblack metal belongs in everyone's worship service, but there truly are people this music blesses and puts them in a mind to remember God.

I remember I was walking to work one morning and I starting sobbing and glorifying God while listening to some metal, I believe it was at the point when the vocalist was screaming, "HE IS ALIVE!" It caused me to reflect that Jesus is alive and I was just overcome.

Hello, Brothers and Sisters in Christ!!!

This is is my first time posting something on the Christian Music Forum (or maybe I posted a Christian song under here in the past, but I honestly couldn't remember, since what I usually do is post a music video for Christian music along with my thoughts and sharings, in hopes of encouraging others). This is gonna come out as a pretty long post (I had to break it in sections, so as not to be too long XD). I hope that you'd give my sharing here a chance, and that you'd find the read not too tedious, and hopefully, somewhat enlightening.

I am, by nature, a great lover of music since I was a kid, it has been a source of great joy and comfort, even before I became a Christian. It was actually my "nightlight" and my "teddy bear" when I was very young XD I was always sent to bed pretty early. Kids usually get very scared of the dark, but I was comfortable sleeping on my own in the full black of my room, with the radio playing 80s music, carrying my thoughts into dreams, my imagination stirred by the songs (I'm the type who loves making stories and scripts in my head XD pretty much always dreaming even when awake!!!). Through the years, I have come to discover different genres. And I can say that my love for music spans throughout all genres. From the refined classical music harmonies, to the nitty-gritty rock beats with impressive riffs. I am not confined to a single one, as long as the overall song appealed to me.

Aside from being exposed constantly to music, I grew to discover that I do have music in me from a raspy voice grew something that was, as my brother put it, "golden" I never want to admit it so much (for fear of becoming puffed up), but I can sing rather beautifully. It is a great gift from GOD, I discovered, as I grew in HIM after HE saved me. HE gave me a voice, not just to express my heart, and touch and impress others. It was, ultimately, a gift to lift up HIS name in praise and worship!!! and oh, how I love to sing to the LORD!!! To worship HIM, expressing my love and adoration for HIM with all that is within me...that is my true desire. And I want to be able to do this, not just with music and words, but with the very way I live for HIM.

Music is, indeed, something wonderful it's a beautiful gift from our GOD, enabling us to touch hearts and express our hearts beyond words. A medium so powerful, that it could be both a blessing and a curse to those who hear. It influences in ways that are hard to explain. It could stir emotion, and sometimes, even affect behavior. For these reasons, I believe the use of music should be one that is done with utmost care, whether it be for personal use, or for reaching out to others. It, by itself, is inherently neutral. But, like a weapon, it could be used for bad or good. And, I'm sure most of you are aware, that Satan has been gifted this talent to create beautiful music which, sadly, he uses to draw people away from GOD instead of closer to HIS heart. That's why mainstream secular music is SO PLEASANT to our senses. It was designed to be that way, not just for marketing the music, but to create a "following". Songs are written and music is made, not just to thrill our senses. They ALWAYS send a message. Two ways: to the listener, and to the bearer of the songs themselves. We can look at it as a proclamation of what is in our hearts, when we are the one singing. And when we sway with the music, we are, with our bodies, showing our approval.

But let's ask ourselves: what ARE we following??? Ourselves and what pleases our senses? Or the Spirit of GOD? Are we listening and supporting worldly artists? Or are we supporting those who are truly inspired by our Holy LORD?

As a person, I do my very best to open my mind and try to understand other people and the things around me. I don't want to get ahead of myself and say something hastily (as I was prone to do in the past. I was very impulsive then). And concerning my Christian faith, I take great care: the things I hear and receive. Specially when it comes to sharing to others, and when coming before our LORD, and what I offer up to HIM. I am far from perfect...I still sin and fail and fall. But by HIS grace, HE enables me to stand up and not give up on myself. And HE leads me to reach out to others, and to share what HE's stirred up in my heart to write here on CC.

Now, talking on the subject at hand, which is Dark-Sounding Christian Music...

Although I was fond of rock, ranging from light to heavy, in the past, when I grew deeper in my faith, this type of music was among those that I had to stir away from. Why? Because this type of music, to me, stirred up so much aggression and negative brooding thoughts within me. But believe me, it was HARD for me to let it go. And it wasn't the only music genre I had to move away from. I also did the same with the transcendental music types, like Enya, if you can believe it. I was ADDICTED to music. As I was being taught through Bible studies and personal quiet times, I was led to answer the question HE placed in my mind: "What will you give up to follow ME?"

It was a very hard decision at the time, but by HIS grace, I was able to give up the music that served as a form of secular bondage in my life. I destroyed all my rock and transcendental tapes, which I couldn't stop listening to. And by HIS grace, again, HE enabled me not to seek them out from different sources. And it helped and I noticed that my periods of negative moods and brooding disappear. I was no longer hooked to listening to worldly music. I could listen to some, but I do so with an awareness and a certain detachment, which I trust to be HIS Spirit protecting me from worldly influences. I became more focused on Christian music, which was mostly hymns and mellow music at that time.

Now, after HE revived me spiritually (I had fallen into darkness for a great number of years after HE saved me. But thankfully, HE didn't give up on me and called me back and set HE set my heart on fire ), I went back to listening to Christian music. And I was SO SURPRISED that there are so many genres of it now!!! XD I had the feeling of living under a prehistoric boulder for so many years because I was so unaware!!! And I tried to catch up at my own pace. This was shortly after I joined CC, since many members were sharing what type of Christian music they were fond of. At the chats, one member shared to me Christian Metal.

Since I so wanted to discover the new Christian music that now exists, I listened in, quite excitedly, too. But....hmm....

As I was listening to that song he shared, it didn't seem like a praise and worship song at all. I tried to understand what message it was trying to convey. It had a lot of anger and pain in it. And even though it mentioned praises to GOD's name, although done with a lot of shouting and roaring and screaming....I couldn't say it at the time, for fear of offending this brother who so loved the song....but, to me, it was just so WRONG.

The imagery it painted wasn't any different to the secular metal music I used to listen to. I imagine the singer jumping around, banging their heads and spazzing their hair, looking messy and disheveled....in my mind was this: "How is this worshipping and praising GOD??? How is this lifting up HIS name??? being so familiar about being closely attuned to music and beats and rhythm and riffs and melodies of rock in the past, all I saw was how it appealed to the flesh and the raw human emotion. But I'm afraid it failed to magnify and glorify GOD, and to show love and devotion to HIM, even though the singing tries so hard to convey passion and intensity. It was just simply....too human. I try to look for GODliness in its parts, because I was so genuinely hungry to praise and worship HIM during that time....but I didn't see any, inspite of the GODly-sounding words amidst the screaming.

I know Christian Metal lovers will not like what I am posting here. But my brethren....please reconsider. And please take great care. I am not here to bring anyone down. But you have to ask yourself: is this music really for pleasing GOD, or for pleasing our senses? And this question applies to other Christian music genre lovers as well. Me included.

I've heard and read of a lot of complaints here on CC about how BAD Christian music sounds. Truth is, we shouldn't be so surprised, specially if we compare such music to secular music. Because worldly music is created by Satan, who was given that great natural gift.

Ezekiel 28:12-15 King James Version (KJV)

12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.

14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.

15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

He was created for the purpose of leading the praise and worship of GOD in the heavens. He was tasked to create beautiful music for honoring and glorifying GOD, but he fell into sin when he exalted himself because he was made so perfect and so beautiful. Now, he is doing the exact opposite with his gifts. He is now pulling people away from GOD.

A lot of the members argue in defense of Christian Metal, saying that, if you pay close attention to the lyrics, the words are scriptural. And they say it helps them a lot when they are anxious or in a dark mood. And they also say it's great for conveying messages to encourage spiritual warfare.

I don't mean to offend with this question, but I have to ask this: is this the first thing you do when you're feeling bad? Do you rely on this sort of music to help make you feel better?

Like I shared earlier, I am a music lover. And I was addicted to music, specially rock and transcendental in the past. It was my "go-to" when I was feeling blue. It was my "pick-me-up" when I was bored and restless. But thankfully, the LORD broke my worldly bonds to those kinds of music, and put a change in my heart when it comes to listening to worldly music. I didn't LOVE it like crazy anymore, even though I could still appreciate it. I used to say I can't survive without music playing all the time, coz life seemed so mundane and so blah, and my emotions are just so haywire. Now, it isn't so much about me depending on the music to make me feel better. Now, it was more about GOD dealing with my negative thoughts and emotions. When I'm feeling blue or angry or anxious or just blah, the first thing I do now is pray. I really just pour my heart out before Papa GOD to deal with me, teach me and heal me. More than anything, HE is truly the One I need to get through the day. And HE has taught me to just worship from the heart, with or without music. I still listen to choice Christian music, but it's not something that I need to get to that place of worship, unlike before. If there is good Christian music that inspires, I praise and thank HIM!!! If there isn't, I'm thankful still, as long as HE has placed that Holy fire of love and devotion in my heart for HIM that enables me to truly worship in Spirit and in truth!!!

Psalm 40 King James Version (KJV)

40 I waited patiently for the Lord; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.

2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.

3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.

4 Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Son of man, take up a lamentation
lamenation:

  • n. The act of bewailing; audible expression of sorrow; wailing; moaning.

I tried to understand what message it was trying to convey. It had a lot of anger and pain in it.

penitence:

  • n. The action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentance.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;
a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

(Psalm 51:17)

indignation:

  • n. Strong displeasure at something considered unjust, offensive, insulting, or base; righteous anger.

God is a righteous judge,
and a God who feels indignation every day.

(Psalm 7:11)
