I have a couple CC'ers involved in this already, but I thought I would post a general annoucement, and see if anyone else would feel led to get involved. I think I have pretty well licked the technological problems involved in making recordings of new music by a team whose members are in different parts of the world. IToreTheSky has told me metal has been done this way for sometime, but to my knowledge, it has never been tried for Christian music.

I have lots of new music, and I'm working to put together a group (from anywhere) who would like to participate in recording it and posting it to youtube. Singers and instrumentalists can each contribute from home, without needing to come to the same recording studio. It would be a new kind of witness to Christian unity, and would establish a new publishing method, which could launch new ministries of people who do not have others to work with to record their music.

I'll be happy to share the techniques of what I'm doing, hoping that soon there will be many such ventures, but it's too big for a first post. All you need is a computer, internet, headphones and a microphone or connection for your instrument to your computer. As far as I know, it would be the first international praise team, and you would learn recording by doing it.

Feel free to ask questions here, or pm if you like.

If you are serious: I will need to have your e-mail address, as we will be exchanging files of up to 3-4 MB. Do you have a harddrive recording program on your computer? If you do, I can just send you instructions. Basically, I will send you a root file, like "music minus one", or you might call it the "accompaniment track". You can download the sheet music from my website. You overtrack your part as a separate track, delete mine, save yours as mp3, and send it to me. I will mix down here, and send you the various "work in progress" samples for your artistic input. I'll also keep you in the loop on making and uploading the finished video.

If you do not have a hard drive recording program, I am using audacity. You can download it for your operating system. If you are using windows, I need to send you a dll file. They cannot distribute the dll file with the program for windows because American law still has the programming code in the dll file patented. It's not wrong to use the dll file in audacity, but if you live in America, it's against the law to copy this file for your own other programs and they want to warn everybody. I will send the link and the file with the instructions.

For now, you can practice with the file for the first song on my website, but I will send you a new one in a day or so, as there are some timing and cueing problems if we try to use this for a permanent recording. The practice file is http://kenbehrens.com/war song.mp3 and the sheet music is http://kenbehrens.com/war song.pdf. If this is not in your key, I need to know ASAP, so I don't spend a lot of time generating a root file you can't sing. Please feel free to add multiple tracks, like harmony, etc., but save each part as a separate file. Leave all the mixing down to me, as you will not have everyone else's track.

You also need to think about if you want your name/country/picture, etc. on the finished video, in my webiste, or if you wish to stay anonymous. Be thinking if you have an idea for a name for the group. When we get one done, I have lots more, and I bet you have a few we could help you do, as well.

I just made a new root track, that you can record with, and have the same timing, one with enough counting so the instruments can start together. Also have a 9 track concept file I can share. I did it quickly so things are not quite together, but you can hear the arrangement I am going for.

That's a great idea Kenis. I was just talking to a friend about doing a collaboration like that over the Internet earlier. I'd like to get involved but I don't have the piece I need to Interface my guitar with my computer....I won't be able to acquire one until next month sometime but I'll definitely get in contact with you when I have the means to participate. I'd love to get involved in musical praise with fellow believers and learn more about recording.

If your guitar is acoustic, you need a microphone. I have good results recording my guitar both with the microphone that came with my laptop for the webcam, and with the microphone in a headset I have used for online teaching. If your guitar is electric, you need a $2 (last time I bought one 10 years ago) 1/4 inch mono female to 1/8 male stereo (maybe mono will work) adapter plug from radio shack. Just put it on one end of a 1/4 inch to 1/4 inch cable, and plug that end into your computer. The other end goes either to your guitar, or more likely to the line out jack in the back of your amplifier, but with the volume probably pretty low. Adjust your computer's audio input properties to reflect "line in" and you should be good to go. You just listen to my root track, and play along. When it's time to record your own music, we'll need to get the vocal first, as issues will arise where the vocal goes over the music otherwise.

If I didn't have this working for nearly free, I wouldn't even be doing it.

Ken's tracks are superb. My daughter and I have been working on vocal tracks to contribute. Both she and I love to sing, but we have no formal training or much experience singing as part of a group. But we're already learning so much working with Ken. And it's so much fun also. :)

I have a Toshiba Satellite C855 with Windows * but I can't toggle my screen while recording. It always cuts it off.

Why would you need to toggle your screen? You get the Audacity Program, I send you a minus-one mp3 file, you open it in Audacity, record your part, save your part mp3, and e-mail it to me. If you would like to try, pm me with a regular e-mail address, and I'll send you the project we are working on, with some intructions, and we can go to it.

If I can get just a couple female vocalists who enjoy doing this, I have many songs to record, and we may be able to launch some ministries.

I never said you had to audition for me. God gives talent to committed people all the time. It's talented people who are not committed to Jesus I worry about. You are obviously of the first type. If you want to do this, e-mail me with a regular e-mail address so I can send you a file to sing with, and instructions how to do it on a computer. I can't attach an mp3 file, or the dll to operate Audacity in Windows, to a CC pm.
