Whatever happened to the days when metal was metal? What is up with all of these sub-genres?! I for one find it hilarious how technical people get in labeling which sub-genre a band belongs to.

Without sub-genres people would already assume that Black metal and Grindcore is the same thing because it is metal, but that may not be the case.
Granted, sub-genres are annoying when someone says something like:
"The Contortionist, wow!, thats some great meodlic hardcore." Next guy, "no you retard, this is clearly deathcore." Next guy: "Calling this band deathcore is an insult! This is clearly metalcore." The actual band: "Guys read the description bar below are videos and bio. We are a Progressive band.

So yeah I understand the frustrations. Then you have the whole stereotypes in metal?!?! Who cares if your a metalhead, emo, scene, goth?.. whatever. Metal is metal.

Underoath is NOT metal. Thats pure blasphemy. Hardcore falls under punk, not metal. Original Underoath was metalcore-ish. But after their first two albums they went mainstream sound and, also, went fail.

This is Underoaths 2nd release, back when they were decent.

1.Technically they are.
2. Punk had a great influenced on metal.
3. Hardcore under Punk? What? Um no

Umm.. wasn't your very last post complaining about guys who argue subgenres? And now you're arguing subgenres?

I can agree that hardcore falls under punk. If you listen to the early stuff like Agnostic Front and Minor Threat, it's very similar to what AFI's original punk sound was.

Thats interesting to know. I own a BTA album, but didn't realise the guitarist was the same(shock horror). I must admit I havn't been keeping up with these things at all(slacker).

Underoath have been one of my all-round favorite christian metalcore bands until their latest album, which I havn't been able to get into unfortunately. Same as Demon Hunter. Both are big heavy weights in the Christian alternative music scene, but after being exposed to their sound many times over the years, the appeal tends to wain, and instead of being exciting, it becomes just "nice". One word "overplayed". Of course any music can suffer the same issue if thrashed to much.
I'm not much of a metalcore guy, but Demon Hunters 1st 3 CD's were awesome. I think The Triptych made my favorite CD the year it came out. But after that they started sounding more like a mix of every other metalcore band, with radio rock, and an occasional dash of real Demon Hunter. Then they lost their guitarist and replaced him with the guy from The Ascendicate, which i thought were boring, cookie cutter metalcore.

To HeIsRisen .. When metal came out there wasn't a lot of options, it was mostly rock/hair metal. Now there are a lot of variations of styles, that people have preferences for and against and having subgenres makes it easier.
Thrash
Death Metal
Grindcore
Black Metal
Metalcore
Deathcore
Hair Metal
Power Metal
Speed Metal
Industrial Metal
and the list goes on.
These are all different styles of music, with different sound and methods of playing. Metalheads started mixing styles, and even other genres into their music. I don't get what's bad about identifying these variations. When i hear about a new band i don't want to hear 'metal band'. That's a generic term which could mean many things.
Also the subgenres appear because the music has expanded to more than just one style. Its called growth. It keeps music from being stagnant. Would you rather there only be one sound in metal and all bands sound the same and play the same style?
Metalcore is a perfect example of this. The style came out about 15 years ago, it changed, experimented and varied over 5 years. Now, the past 10 years there's been little change. Bands now sound like they did 10 years ago. The music has become boring, predictable and stagnant and its mostly young teens new to the scene that perpetuate it.I'd hate for the whole metal scene to end up like the metalcore scene.

Preferably I like a good mix of numerous styles of metal all in one. BTA was a good example of this when they first came out. LS has always mixed varying styles of metal in their music. In cases like that, and Machine Head where I can't really pinpoint a particular sound I usually just call it straight forward metal.

Come on now, Zaoman, Machine Heads genre is 'Djent'. *poke, keep up with the times, old man. :p

My favorite LS were the first three. Slayer clones, a Fear Factory-esque and just thrashy/deathy. After that they started going in a more metalcore direction.

By the way, you know the band Crowbar? The last CD they did, Sever The Hand Of The Wicked got my attention by the title. For years now i was always curious about the band and its stances. Some of the lyrics had religious overtones and seemed to get stronger over the years. Apparently the vocalist is either the only original member and pretty much is the band, or hes just taken over completely haha. Anyways, i read an article in a secular metal mag with him, and he was talking about how God helped him quit booze and drugs. He went on to say he was a born again Christian. I think he's a little more self styled, maybe raised in a Christian home and now trying to recall what he knew. Seems like he definately needs someone to pick him up and teach and train him.
But check out the lyrics to that last album. One song has an f-bomb, but just one. A few of the songs are a little dark, but nothing in them that i haven't seen in some other Christian albums. And a number of the songs have very straightforward lyrics that could easily fit on a fully Christian CD. So its kind of interesting. And they definately have a unique sound, even among secular bands. I pop some of their stuff on once in a while, just because i can detect that spiritual edge to some of their stuff.

While i'm on tangents, its time to post another video. I'm bucking the system and playing a non-metal video. But it has a metal drummer, Ted Kirkpatrick of Tourniquet. This is such an awesome CD.

I said I dont like to agrue over sub-genres that clearly dont belong in a band's realm.

I know crowbar, just because I know people who are friends with Kirk Weinsted :D, who if you don't know is also the guitarist for Down, and Kingdom of Sorrow. Apparently this girl I know was/is best friends with Kirks now girlfriend, so he gets them into all his shows whenever a band of his is playing in the area and her and her husband get to hang out with all of them, they even got to meet the legendary Phil Anselmo. I didn't know that about Crowbar though, I'll definitely have to check them out. I know Jamey Jasta was raised Episcopalian, I was always curious about him because Hatebreed lyrics seemed to fall under that same line to me, they could almost be christian lyrics without the over abundant F-bomb. I'm actually going to see if Spotify has Crowbar right now!

As for Ted Kirkpatrick, him and David from Extol have got to be two of the best drummers in metal overall.

Another great (quite diverse sounding band) I always forget to mention when talking industrial/metal is MORTAL! (they under the name Mortal alone have touched on every style it seems, not to mention all the side-projects Jyro & Jerome have done)
IMO brilliant lyrics too & not always obviously over-preachy. I saw this pic the other day & just laughed, had to post it.

Petra's original vocalist did have a pretty wicked hair metal band along the lines of WASP.

And Enter In was a pretty sweet song.

I was always under the assumption that Greg X. Voltz was the original singer of Petra...I dunno,I'll be honest I don't remember too much about the band, except that the guitar player Bob something? lol had been in it since the start. They had some pretty catchy tunes.

Never a big Petra fan, but the Capture In Time And Space album was pretty cool. Love to hear a lot of those songs redone by modern industrial bands.

The did a little something a long time ago called never say dinosaur that was a Petra tribute. It had MxPx and Pacifist on it for sure, and I don't remember who all else. I think we're due for another one though for sure.

My first heavy christian band was Grammatrain, still love them and have all their albums (except the live one which went missing). My first christian metal band was bloodgood, 'nuff said :)
