Bell suggested that instead of transforming the world, a "ghettoized, Evangelical subculture" has instead turned people away from Christ.
Well, as an off topic from the main, he is 100% right on that point.

I don't think any Christian can disagree that the modern evangelistic culture coming from mainstream America has turned people away from Christianity in record droves. I don't think there has been any other point in history where so many people have been turned off Christianity by the behaviour of the Right Wing.

I think it goes back to the Vietnam war and Hippy culture.

Kind of disturbing that we learnt Richard Nixon the Republican candidate committed treason (with the Vietnam war) to win the election. Yet it's 2013 and mainstream Christians want people to support the Republicans.

Get politics out of religion and the people will return.

Or keep tearing apart Christianity.

it has nothing to do with christians trying to represent God in politics...in fact this is something God wants us to do...

it has everything to do with a relativistic and hedonistic world being offended at absolute standards of truth and righteousness...

true rachel
Bell's version 'transforming the world' has nothing to do with anything Biblical.

this kind of 'transforming the world' is coming from all sides of the fake church right now...including the new pope who just announced he's down with 'civil union' - like.....all those centuries of lay catholics holding out against stuff like that just to be betrayed in the end.

the stuff about jesus being the only way to heaven...the trinity...the miracles...the divinity of jesus...the promise of heaven...the existence of hell...the prohibitions against homosexuality...inspiration and infallibility of scripture...

of course not -all- mainline protestant churches reject -all- of these truths...but the majority reject some or all of them...
Ive never been to a church that denied any of that. Individual churches might but its nothing like denomination wide Ive ever seen except the far liberal congregations which I wouldnt count as mainline either though i know some do.

Rob Bell, the former "rock star" pastor of Michigan's Mars Hill Bible Church, has come out in support of same-sex marriage.

Speaking during a forum at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral Monday, Bell said the ship of traditional marriage "has sailed."

"Yes, I am for marriage. I am for fidelity. I am for love, whether it's a man and woman, a woman and a woman, a man and a man," he said. "I think this is the world we are living in and we need to affirm people wherever they are." Listen to the full audio of Bell's comments here.

Bell suggested that instead of transforming the world, a "ghettoized, Evangelical subculture" has instead turned people away from Christ.

I guess he feels God has changed his mind.

@meggars

What do you make of Rob Bell? Is he sincerely well-meaning or is there something much darker going on with him? Do you think he shows the world who he truly is or does he hide behind a mask?

I don't want to be caught in the trap of passing judgment on a person's intent as that isn't really something that can be proven unless he outright admits something and he, being the super evasive person that he is would never do that. I will say that as far back as the first nooma video i ever saw of him i thought something was "off" about him. I am generally pretty good at reading a person quickly and accurately though and I think he has proven to be too slick and calculated to be a totally sincere basket of sunshine and lollipops.

Love your turn of phrase there!

I think you would agree that a measure of cynicism is necessary for the 21st century Christian. Better than discerning a wolf in sheep's clothing is the ability to see them coming a mile away. ;)

Mainline Protestantism for the most part is dead, and apostate. Dehydrated Christians is all it is.

EDIT:
I'm not sure why anyone should be shocked by this though. These types are people pleasers, and go with the social flow. The Republican party is doing the same thing with it's platform right now.

Oak Lawn Methodist Church in Dallas, TX is a ”gay” church. I attended one of their services before knowing this fact and IT JUST WASN'T A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE! Needless to say I never went there again. But people are surely being deceived even in Lord's own house.

2 Peter 2:1
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them--bringing swift destruction on themselves.

It says among, not next to. ;) Could be the guy next to ya'.

I went to a UCC church once... and I mean, once.

I stood in the parking lot across the street for five minutes debating whether to go in or not.

Yea me going to that church was like a desperate attempt to find fellowship in a new state like _thousands of miles away from home and once the service started I was so anxious for it to end and I could get out of that place.
If you have watched the movie Madagascar, like King Julian, I got the ”heebie-jeebies” :p

Haha. The hireling at the UCC was boasting about how his church was part of a ministry of different pastors, and that some were pursuing their own interests. I asked him for a list of the churches represented, because I knew what it meant. Just so happens, it was all the apostate non-christian churches in town. I knew who not to go to. :)

EDIT: That's part of how I ended up at a Southern Baptist church. I couldn't handle the sinner's prayer though. "Pray this prayer, now you're saved!" I'm at a Reformed Baptist church now, and lovin' it.
