I've been in both.

The differences are few. The result is the same.

I sometimes wonder if some people have a knack for picking a bad church like women marrying wife beaters & cheaters. :p

This is kinda like when people are so offended by a really bad smell when they open a Tupper wear container the first thing they do is say, "Here smell this. It's really gross. . . then they take another whiff before putting back into the refrigerator. Just don't smell it anymore.

Re: "Humble yourself" John MacArthur Says Charisma Writer: Strange Fire Conference

i heard from a Lutheran teacher that Phil Johnson delivered an awesome speech: Baby Bathwater.

looking forward to hearing that. Phil is amazing.

oh...some transcription:

Strange Fire – Is There a Baby in the Bathwater? – Phil Johnson | the Cripplegate

Thanks for the link. The article by Mike Riccardi was worth the price of admission! It was a wonderful revelation to know that both Wayne Grudem and John Piper are either charismatic or closet charismatic. While Piper has written some good books, together they wrote a book which was laughable about complementarianism. Now I am not saying people don't have the right to believe what they want, but it says a lot to me that these leaders of that movement are also involved in this false prophetic movement. I always kept my mouth shut about some of the things that John Piper wrote, out of respect for his credentials, I will not any longer! As for Grudem, just an idiot, and glad I can finally say it.

This really confirms my suspicions about the charismatic, and how grateful I am to God for pulling me away nearly 20 years ago.

I'm off to read the transcripts.

PS. Good warning about Reformed charismatics. I remember a few years back in Seminary, one man introduced himself to a traditional reformed pastor. When the charismatic said, "I'm Reformed too! Reformed charismatic" the Reformed pastor just blanched and said "Is there such a thing??" He sure was right to say that. I can't see that it is possible to be both!

Sorry, the transcription of "Is there a Baby in the Bathwater?" was Phil Johnson, just like Zone stated. It was transcribed by Mike Riccardi!

Re: "Humble yourself" John MacArthur Says Charisma Writer: Strange Fire Conference

I think he just denies holy laughter, barking like a dog, convulsing, and attributing all that to the Holy Spirit. He also seems to deny people who make things up in their heads, utter it, then attribute it to the Holy Spirit.
I deny them too, but I don't say everyone that's charismatic is doing it. That's a stereotypical judgement call. You have to be everywhere to see them all. It doesn't matter if it's 35% bad, 70% bad, or even 93% bad, it's still not across the board. That's like saying all Mormons have multiple wives. Sheesh!

the claim of direct revelation is the culprit.

a disaster.

There are differing practices in the pentacostal/chrasimatic churches.

When tongues are spoken there should be an interpreter.

If a ''prophet'' is wrong, they are not a prophet.

God is not some Genie granting wishes to the righteous.

God elicits emotional responses, they are not manipulated into existence.

Ah, the all too human desire to have one's cake AND eat it.

Re: "Humble yourself" John MacArthur Says Charisma Writer: Strange Fire Conference

Maybe God is using JM for his glory. If you don't have counterfeits you won't know what the real is. People like JM show us what a counterfeit looks like (JM) and that teaches us to avoid them.

I remember a story in the New Testament that goes like this....

Act 5:34 But one of the members was the Pharisee Gamaliel, a highly respected teacher. He ordered the apostles to be taken out of the room for a little while. Then he said to the council: People of Israel, be careful what you do with these men. Not long ago Theudas claimed to be someone important, and about four hundred men joined him. But he was killed. All his followers were scattered, and that was the end of that. Later, when the people of our nation were being counted, Judas from Galilee showed up. A lot of people followed him, but he was killed, and all his followers were scattered. So I advise you to stay away from these men. Leave them alone. If what they are planning is something of their own doing, it will fail. But if God is behind it, you cannot stop it anyway, unless you want to fight against God. The council members agreed with what he said, and they called the apostles back in. They had them beaten with a whip and warned them not to speak in the name of Jesus. Then they let them go.

Whatever JM says, if what he is railing against is of God then he is wasting his time because if God is behind what is happening, JM won't stop it. Then again if God is not behind it all, JM is wasting his time as they will fail anyway.

What JM is showing us is that he has very little faith in God and that he doesn't think that he can deal with the good and the bad.

My personal view is that the majority of churches are counterfeit including JMs as most of them totally ignore what is shown in the scripture about the life and operation of the church i.e. where in scripture do you bring someone in from outside the church, call him pastor and pay him a salary? Think about it before you jump down my throat.
