FBI flying surveillance aircraft over US cities; planes traced to fake companies

The FBI is operating a small air force with scores of low-flying planes across the country carrying video and, at times, cellphone surveillance technology -- all hidden behind fictitious companies that are fronts for the government, The Associated Press has learned.

The planes' surveillance equipment is generally used without a judge's approval, and the FBI said the flights are used for specific, ongoing investigations. In a recent 30-day period, the agency flew above more than 30 cities in 11 states across the country, an AP review found.
The FBI, under questioning from AP and Fox News, confirmed the use of small aircraft like the 182 aircraft. The two news organizations traced the aircraft to at least 13 fake companies, such as FVX Research, KQM Aviation, NBR Aviation and PXW Services. Even basic aspects of the program are withheld from the public in censored versions of official reports from the Justice Department's inspector general.

But the FBI makes the ludicrous claim that the program "is not secret." Then why withhold the information about it from DOJ's IG? Perhaps because the program ...

  • is "warrantless," meaning the overflights are carried out without judicial review
  • can gather video and metadata unrelated to ongoing investigations for possible review by local law enforcement and prosecutors
  • appears to be in violation of First and Fourth Amendment guarantees, and the assumed principle of a right to privacy.
'Big Brother' indeed.

When was the time frame? We had a smaller plane circling around for a while early last week. Before, all we see are commercial airlines on their way to LAX or sheriff helicopters circling, but never small aircraft. My wife took notice and I couldn't figure it out. But this would make sense.

They continue today. They don't even have the good grace to be embarrassed at getting caught. I'm sure it's entirely possible your wife and you saw Big Brother in action.

Data-mining from a Cessna is new.

Never know, ever since our neighbor threw some seed over the fence into our yard we've been having some funny looking green plants having 7 or 8 points on each leaf :p

We have a number of general aviation aircraft overhead in our area all the time. There are a number of legitimate uses for these airplanes. The operational costs of fixed wing aircraft like the 182 are significantly lower than the rotor wing aircraft and the only thing you give up is the ability to hover but you do get a longer loiter time.

If I knew it was big brother overhead I'd be tempted to moon him. Let them put that on an FBI wanted poster.
