White House: American, Italian hostages killed in US strike

An American and an Italian held hostage by Al Qaeda were accidentally killed in a U.S. counterterrorism operation earlier this year, the White House said Thursday, in a stunning and tragic admission.

The White House also revealed that two American terror operatives were killed, but the revelation that hostages died -- in an apparent drone strike -- is leading to what President Obama called a "full review."
Poor intelligence led to the deaths of American development expert Warren Weinstein and Italian national Giovanni Lo Porto. The drone strike was approved without knowledge Weinstein and Lo Porto were in western Afghanistan.

Ahmed Farouq, an American Al Qaeda leader, was killed in the same operation in which the hostages died. American-born Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn was killed in January in a separate incident.

My opinion, as ex-military, is that the poor intel is a direct result of underfunding intelligence operations in both the military and civilians agencies, and the forced retirement of veteran military analysts who would have done a better job of reading the signs in and around the camp where the terrorists and their hostages were hit.

Sad for the innocent who died, glad that justice was done to the guilty.

And I would agree...when the grand poo-bah fired and removed how many top military commanders to only be replaced with stooges not only leads to this type of action, but also sets the stage for the demise and destruction of the U.S..........

A new analysis of the data available to the public about drone strikes, conducted by the human-rights group Reprieve, indicates that even when operators target specific individuals – the most focused effort of what Barack Obama calls “targeted killing” – they kill vastly more people than their targets, often needing to strike multiple times. Attempts to kill 41 men resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,147 people, as of 24 November.

Some 24 men specifically targeted in Pakistan resulted in the death of 874 people. All were reported in the press as “killed” on multiple occasions, meaning that numerous strikes were aimed at each of them. The vast majority of those strikes were unsuccessful. An estimated 142 children were killed in the course of pursuing those 24 men, only six of whom died in the course of drone strikes that killed their intended targets.

In Yemen, 17 named men were targeted multiple times. Strikes on them killed 273 people, at least seven of them children. At least four of the targets are still alive.

but it is only after killing Western hostages that Obama calls for a review ?
