Local police have arrested former Virginia football player Chris Jones, who was sought as a lone gunman who killed three members of the 2022 Cavaliers football team and injured two others on campus Sunday night in Charlottesville, Virginia. Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr. and D'Sean Perry were all fatally shot, according to University of Virginia president Jim Ryan.
Two other players are hospitalized for gunshot wounds with one in critical condition and the other in good condition, according to Ryan.
UVA police chief Tim Longo was alerted during a Monday morning press conference that Jones had been taken into custody. Jones is an active student at Virginia but was no longer a member of the football team. It appears he was last on the Cavs roster in 2018.
A shelter in place order was lifted late Monday morning after the Virginia campus was locked down for a "thorough search" with classes canceled as police continue seeking for Jones, who allegedly shot five people at a parking deck known as Culbreth Garage on UVA Central Grounds on Sunday around 10:30 p.m. ET. Charlottesville City Schools also canceled classes for more than 4,000 local students.
"As of this writing, I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care," Ryan said in a prior statement. "We are working closely with the families of the victims, and we will share additional details as soon as we are able...This is a message any leader hopes never to have to send, and I am devastated that this violence has visited the University of Virginia."
