Blood diamonds have taught us that diamonds are actually cheap and plentiful, kept theatrically
high-priced by DeBeers and others in the diamond industry. In fact, diamonds aren't rare at all, both supply and demand being artificially controlled.

Don't think the 2006 Leo DiCaprio movie "Blood Diamond" is a theatrical invention. Diamonds really are kept in vaults away from public knowledge and view -- out of sight, out of mind. Then some dolt who is star-struck-in-love puts out between three months' and a year's wages to impress a girl with something that, the moment he walks out of the store, drops in value by 50%. Heck, cars don't even devaluate that much driving them off the lot.

And yes, I bought my wife a nice diamond, knowing full well it was dumb. Such is BST Syndrome -- a malady that causes most men and a few women to be drawn to "bright shiny things," be it a new anniversary edition Mustang ...

... or a huge rock that makes a woman's hand look small.
