I think this all depends on your worldview. People who tend to have a negative view towards assistance tend to be very independent minded...whereas, people who need assistance come from backgrounds where independence is limited and they have no choice but to depend on others in order to survive. The people who are actually getting government benefits have to prove they are seeking for a job on a frequent basis. But sadly, those who do have a job eventually won't have enough money to care for themselves. Are there people who take advantage of the system? Absolutely. But there are people who do need it. I don't see reducing the amount as the solution to the problem. That's just similar to trying to cover it up with a bandaid. The root of the problem is deeper than that. The needs of the poor do need to be addressed. Most of them are poor to no fault of their own. I think the situation would be improved if the church would build up a stronger network of food pantries. Personally, I don't believe the government should be trying to play the role of the church in helping people. They've done a poor job with it altogether. But if the church isn't willing to help them, then the government will obviously "fill in the need" and exploit it. Government aid for welfare like TANF and SNAP and WIC are things that are necessary a lot of times. I don't like the idea of those being cut when there are many other things are government is funding that shouldn't even be happening: funding other countries' wars with which we are not involved with, science programs that are not issues of life and death. There is plenty of it that can be reduced without cutting out aid.
