Curt Schilling exposes Twitter trolls after receiving vulgar messages about his daughter

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling is firing back at cyberbullies who posted offensive comments about his daughter on Twitter after he congratulated her for being accepted into Salve Regina University.

Schilling’s daughter, Gabby, will begin playing softball there next year. But a message that Schilling posted drew vulgar and sexually-explicit comments about his daughter from several people.

In his blog, 38 Pitches, Schilling wrote “tweets with the word rape, bloody underwear and pretty much every other vulgar and defiling word you could likely fathom began to follow.

"I was a jock my whole life. I played sports my whole life. Baseball since I was 5 until I retired at 41. I know clubhouses. I lived in a dorm. I get it. Guys will be guys. Guys will say dumb crap, often,” Schilling said. “But I can’t ever remember, drunk, in a clubhouse, with best friends, with anyone, ever speaking like this to someone…”
So Schilling reposted some of the tweets on his blog "38 Pitches." Internet users, outraged at the comments, went after the Twitter account owners, notified Schilling when they found them, and he exposed them, again in his blog. A community college student who apparently started the tweets has been suspended from his school, a DJ has been fired from an East Coast club, and Schilling is looking for others to expose them as well.

This kind of thing is totally unacceptable. This is the problem with social media: Pseudo-anonymity makes these clowns think they're Superman, while they sit in the dungeons high-fiving themselves for their latest "clever tweet" or post because no one else wants to hang around them in person. Good for Schilling! If more parents took this attitude instead of hying off to court and trying to get monetary gain out of incidents like this, the trolls would eventually realize playing with other people's lives ain't cool!

Simple solution...if you don't want negative comments on your family's life events, don't broadcast them to thousands of people.

So, given that Wedding announcements, and Death announcements should never be published because doing so gives some people the right to publish hate speech? Graduation announcement would be the same.

Seriously?

Exactly. Some idiot tweeted a similar comment to F&F this morning when they were talking about the story. Blaming Schilling for the attacks on his daughter because he posted congratulations on her softball scholarship is stupid. That's what social media is for. It isn't for the trolls to have their fun and prove anonymously how "smart" they are.

you know how ironic you used the "hate speech" line, considering many people who consider what Christians post about the sin of homosexuality as hate speech.

But beside that, this is the internet, full of millions and millions of Idiots, what do you expect to happen? everyone will play like unicorns farting rainbows and pixie dust?

If you think the "internet" is anything social you have something to learn, the Internet is the most ANTI-SOCIAL thing around.

When you post on the net you have to deal with idiots who are going to flame,be mean, say hateful things. ether except it or get off the net cause you can't handle it. See and sad thing is about all this, now a group like 4chan will probably get involved just to stir it up and it will get much much worse. People really are their own worse enemies.

If you post anything on the net expect idiots to show, and if you post personal things about family, well expect the worst.

That doesn't mean they have the right to do so, particularly when the things said, as with Gabby Schilling, were more than just flaming and hateful, they were threatening to her personal and sexual safety.

ether except it or get off the net cause you can't handle it.
No one has to put up with threats against their family, period.

See and sad thing is about all this, now a group like 4chan will probably get involved just to stir it up and it will get much much worse. People really are their own worse enemies.
Like Schilling, I will not live in fear nor allow my family to be targeted, threatened, ridiculed, or made a sexual reference. If I were the anonymous participants on 4chan, I'd think twice about messing with Schilling, or anyone else as motivated to put a stop to cyberbullying and cyber terrorism as he is -- or as I am, for that matter.

If you post anything on the net expect idiots to show, and if you post personal things about family, well expect the worst.
So don't post at all, is your recommendation? I don't think so.

1st you obviously have no idea how a group like 4chan works.

2nd If you post on the net expect the worst, hateful, mean, ect comments isn't a new thing, its been going on since the dawn of easy net access.

3rd Why is it so hard for people not to post personal stuff on the net? seriously, that is one of the biggest issues today is people posting every little thing they do, then when the idiots show they start to cry about mean people, again the internet is NOT unicorns farting rainbows and pixie dust, its hard mean and will chew you up and spit you out just like the mean streets of a run down ghetto. remember the old saying can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen. AND I will say this the guy was an idiot for even posting pictures of his daughter on the net, sure he is proud of her and he should be but THINK about posting stuff first. A simple thing people forget.

I could care less how a group of clueless, anonymous idiots "work." They would attack me and mine at their own peril, just as these other fools attacked Schilling and his daughter.

Somewhere in the far, distant, murky past, the first murder was recorded. God dealt with it, given He was the only moral authority available at the time. We have the moral authority to defend our own, now, and that's what Schilling has done. It is what I would do.

You keep saying, brother, "Its gonna happen," without acknowledging that 1) it isn't right, or 2) it doesn't have to happen. Schilling did nothing wrong in posting his congratulatory message to his daughter, and he has every right and expectation to believe threats of rape against her by idiots with a Twitter, Facebook, or even 4chan account must be met with outrage and, where appropriate, revenge.

"Its gonna happen" is no excuse for the fact it does happen. I applaud Schilling, and if the same thing happened to me and my family, I'd do the exact same thing. You can jeer at us from the sidelines for our folly, or you can join in the effort to shut down the idiots. Your choice. We'll do what we'll do, either way.

see that is the problem right there, people think they are going to "shut down" the haters and such guess what its not going to happen.

You also have the moral authority NOT to put yourself nor family in situations that can cause them harm, seriously its like a bonehead who walks around the streets of Gary,Indiana counting out a wad of cash and then cries cause someone stabbed him and took his money. DON"T PUT YOURSELF NOR FAMILY IN POSITIONS THAT CAN CAUSE THEM HARM. but i forgot that is common sense and common sense don't exist in America anymore.

True, but the quote you posted is inane............and nothing ironic about those know what hate speech is and what the Word of God is. If Christians state what is in Scripture, and others consider it hate speech, then the hate is in their hearts, not the Christians..............

it is ironic, It don't matter if we are correct or not but simple fact is what we say can be considered hate speech to some. it is the way things are, and the way things are going it may not be too much longer till those who believe as we do will be tossed in the clink just for saying what we believe.

If I want to be absolutely assured I don't have a car accident, I guess I sell my truck and my wife's car, hm?

If I want to be absolutely certain I don't get sick, I hermetically seal us up in our house and avoid all contact with the outside world, hm?

If I don't want to be insulted, attacked, threatened, I never reach out socially, I never go to church, I never offer an opinion, I never say anything to anyone, hm?

Your solution is no solution at all. The Internet is just like the rest of the world, perhaps a bit more dicey because of the anonymity available to fools and jerks who delight in attempting to prove how "brave" or "masculine" they are by flexing their verbal muscles, thinking no one will ever get to them.

If I want to Tweet my daughter and say, "Way to go" for something great that happened in her life, that is not an invitation for some idiot to chime in and attempt to shake our family, our convictions, our personal feelings of safety and security. If someone thinks that is their invitation, that they have the right to post idiocy, vulgarity, and cyber-bullying nonsense, they'll answer to me, and wish they'd never had the knuckle-headed thought to post it. And if you think I'm being ignorant, callous, or irresponsible in posting that "Way to go," that's your problem, not mine.

And by the way, if this is, in fact, your "solution" to the problem, let me know when you're selling your computer and your smartphone. I'll make a reasonable offer on 'em both.

Let me ask you something. would you go to the roughest ghetto where 5 murders happen a day and sit and count out 1,000$ in 20 dollar bills over and over?

the internet is the same hard ghetto.

if you "tweet" then well if someone wants to be a jerk they will be a jerk and you nor nobody else is going to stop them.

My solution is I don't post personal stuff about me on the net. no pictures, no personal information, nyet. I have common sense unlike others. so no I don't have to sell my computer. as for smart phones, don't have one I don't need a government spy device on me 24/7 nor do I need to be "connected" to some ones and zeros 24/7 like so many others. and I sure as heck wouldn't pimp out my families personal lives on the net ether, sadly that is what so many do and fail to realize it. If I want to congratulate someone I will do it FACE TO FACE instead of hiding behind anti-social media

I will also put down the fact, if you are one who posts every detail about your life on the net, don't complain about government intruding into your own private life.

I go to the ghettos three times a week, driving a brand new 50th anniversary Mustang GT500 Convertible, to do pro bono addictions treatment at inner city black churches, so I as much as do the same thing, and the car has never been touched.

the internet is the same hard ghetto.
No it isn't. Not even close.

Really? Maybe you'd better read the Schilling story again.

My solution is I don't post personal stuff about me on the net. no pictures, no personal information, nyet.
And you think that protects you? That's pretty naïve, actually.

... and I sure as heck wouldn't pimp out my families personal lives on the net ether, sadly that is what so many do and fail to realize it.
Tweeting "congrats" to a sibling, offspring, friend, co-worker, isn't "pimping" anyone or anything. It is using the current technology to communicate with others. And we do realize what we're doing, we have safeguards against hackers, etc., and we can take action like Schilling did when idiots crop up attempting to "prove" something about themselves. What they prove is that they're idiots, nothing else.

Look, I respect your decision to remain as anonymous as possible. That's what you want to do. The rest of us will do what we want to do, take the precautions necessary to prevent private information from getting into the wrong hands, like SSNs, bank acct. numbers, credit card numbers, etc. We can take care of ourselves with the rest of the knuckleheads out there. That's what Schilling did, and he has no blame for wishing his daughter well. The wrongdoers here are the idiots who threatened her. Done here. This isn't getting us anywhere.

#1 - You been lucky so far, I know of places that mustang wouldn't last.

#2 - yes the internet is one big ghetto, sure it has some nice places (like CC) but it has quite of bit run down areas and shady people

#3 - oh yeah woooo he posted some screen shots of people being mean, that's really going to make all the other haters scared to death. when all it did is now make him a target for more trolling and hate. he just kicked the proverbial hornets nest.

#4 - Yeah it does protect me, random people will not get my real name nor address. I use fake names on all accounts. I don't do credit cards nor banks I am off the grid. I don't even pay for internet I actually have nothing in my name. also I am debt free.

#5 - why can't you just be Social and congrats them face to face, or at least with a phone call using your own voice. sorry but text on a screen is very anti-social and impersonal. I would actually be insulted if you tried to congrats me with just text on a screen, its as if you are too good to be social and use your own voice or face to face.

And you are right, you will do what you do but don't sit and cry cause someone is mean to you over the net. I for one will have no pity for it. and as for schilling he didn't take care of any knuckleheads all he did is paint a bigger target on him for the trolls. just because you may win a battle it don't mean you win a war.

it is far past time people quit looking at the internet as some social thing, its not it is ANTI-social and very impersonal.

You just don't get it, Wise. I don't cry. I don't get angry. I get even. This kind of crap is the same as if someone tried to break into my house and harm my family. I live here, I have a right to be here. I also have a right, and due to my profession, a need to be on the Internet, and I will not be messed with there, and neither will my family.

Why don't you tell that to Curt Schilling? Good grief, man!

I am now convinced you haven't even read the OP, the linked article, or my comments. So this entire endeavor has been a waste of time with someone who lacks the necessary information -- that would be you -- to carry on the discussion we've attempted to have over the course of the day. Thanks for the input. Sayonara.

hey if you want to sink to the low level of trying to troll trolls good luck. and as for me reading, yes I did, I can't tell which is one is the real idiot, the idiots with the hateful comments or the idiot giving them the time of day which is what they want.
