I thought this was common knowledge but the leaders have finally admitted it: Mormon leaders admit church founder Joseph Smith practiced polygamy | Fox News

Nine of his wives were under the age of 17 and one was 14. He told her that an angel told him that if she didn't marry him he would die. Classic cult behavior, start a religion to get a lot of young girls to sleep with you.

ETA: Actually this Fox article softens the whole thing. Maybe they were afraid of offending their Mormon base. CNN and other places provide more details.

Can't wait to hear Glenn Beck's tearful explanation of this historical evidence about Joseph Smith. Some of his 40 wives were already married to other men.
