Is it really that hard to tell us apart from Australia? New Zealand is about to vote... Should New Zealand change their flag to this? Yeah or Nah?

It's kinda depressing, I liked the flag of Old Zeeland more.

Hmmm, I kinda like it just from an aesthetic perspective, but what's the symbolic meaning behind it?

The image of the silver fern is widely representative of New Zealand and New Zealanders. It is an image to which all New Zealanders relate and is a powerful and emotional symbol of inspiration at times when it matters.

The symbol comes from the leaf of the New Zealand fern - Cyathea Dealbata (Ponga is the Maori name). The leaves are dark green on the upper side and silver underneath. The underside glows brightly in moonlight providing excellent track markers in New Zealand's native forests. It was often used by Maori as bedding for sleeping on due to the thin texture of the 'hairs'...

So basically it's like we would replace our flag with something like this:

Hm, it's a nice design, but I assume most people have emotions connected to their flag, so changing it is sort of strange, isn't it?

Let me guess ..some group of left-wing loons was offended by the old flag because it represents something outside their PC insanity?

Lol according to the OP it's because the current NZ flag seems to resemble Australia's too much for their taste. The NZers and the ausies don't like getting mixed up with each other.

I hope they keep the flag with the Union Jack. They are still a commonwealth nation.

That said, I do kinda dig the fern. Maybe it could be on a secondary flag.

Okay okay. So us (the NZ residents) have just been told that we're always getting confused with the Australian flag. That's one of the major reasons. Somehow I think it's a bit more than that... something about getting rid of the union jack. Meh... Haven't you guys ever seen the All Blacks rugby team? Best in the world... oh that's right your countries don't play that aye... well anyways they have a fern as their logo. Since rugby is pretty much New Zealand's god they deem it fit that the silver fern should be on our flag. All our sports teams are either directly or loosely related to the fern symbol and the black in the corner is just the colour we're always recognized by.

I watch rugby and their hakka dance is pretty cool, those guys are thick and really good. But I still don't get the fern what does that have to do with rugby or even the new zealand flag? I think minus the fern and black and just solid blue with the stars would have looked better imo.
