Stop me before... (quote from Michael Jordan to a Stanford player)

(excerpt)

"Even though it was for only one play, I was guarding Michael Jordan," Jacobsen wrote. "My next thought to myself was, 'Don't embarrass yourself in front of your idol!' MJ didn't have the ball at the time, but I knew that it was only a matter of time before he would. He cut to the top of the key at the three-point line and received a pass from Darius Miles.

"This was it! My moment. It was me versus him, one-on-one. Jordan squared me up to the basket, palming the ball in one hand like he always did (he has HUGE hands). He then stopped for a second and looked at me, saying: 'You know… No white boy has ever been able to stop me before,'" Casey added.

"I couldn't believe it. MJ was talking trash to me!" he continued. "I fought off a smile, and before I could muster another thought, he had taken a dribble to his left and pulled up for a jump shot. I did all I could to stay in front of him and put a hand in his face. Luckily, he missed the shot."

What about Larry Bird?
Despite what MJ told Casey, a white player did use to torch "His Airness," especially early on in his career.

Larry Bird beat Jordan in all of their playoff duels in the NBA. The two faced each other 34 times; 28 in the regular season and six in the postseason. The legendary forward holds a lopsided winning record of 23-11 against MJ.

"No white boy has ever been able to stop me before" - Michael …

Now, it may well have just been "trash talk," but IF a white player had said the same thing about black players, can you imagine how crazy the NBA player, and Media would have gone? Seriously. Is "trash talk" racist remark STILL Racist?

(just wondering)

Today Black Racism is perfectly acceptable, and even encouraged. Just don't point it out as "racism", since some Black woman recently said that Blacks can't be racist! And Biden (with a lengthy record of racism) can't be racist since he only said "You ain't Black if you don't support me". And Obama can't be racist since after all he is Black/White.

But the fault lies on both sides. Blacks in America voluntarily went into mental and emotional slavery by choosing the Democrat "plantation", even though the Democrats were the ones practicing slavery. And Democrats believe they have a God-given right to demand and receive every Black vote. More recently some Blacks at least are waking up to their own stupidity, just like some Jews are waking up to the same stupidity. The Democrats hate both Blacks and Jews, but think they are "useful idiots" for blindly voting for them. And Al Sharpton thinks this blindness must go on forever.

I don't remember any defender stopping MJ. The running joke in Chapel Hill was the only one who could keep Michael under 30 points was Dean Smith.

IF a white player had said this towards black players, how would the NBA and the Media have reacted? To me, this is the important question. In my experience, when blacks make racist comments/insults while "trash talking," it is just laughed off. However, when whites make racist comments/insults while "trash talking," they pay a dear price for doing so. I believe there is a double standard when it comes to racist comments, be they "trash talking" or not.

At UNC, possibly. Did you read the Article? Larry Bird dominated Jordan when they played in the NBA though. :)

Bird was on the far better team. The Celtics had arguably the best front line in all of history. I guarantee you that Bird could not stop Jordan, but they had some great McDonald's commercials...nothing but net.

A white player did say this towards black players, Larry Bird was one of the biggest trash talkers in the history of the game and people respected him because he backed it up.

He should have had the presence-of-mind to reply with something like:

"Well - there can always be a first time..."

Bird went heads up with Jordan, and won far more times than lost. I know how great Jordan was, and IMO, Bird was just as dominate a player. Anyway, Bird did trash talk, but, unless someone, somewhere has him saying "You know, no black boy ever stopped me." Then, his trash talk did not include racial slurs. Right?

He complained to Charles Barkley that they were disrespecting him because they were defending him with a white boy. That is every bit as insulting as what Jordan said, only worse because everyone on the team heard it.

People weren't so soft and easily hurt back in Bird's day.

Instead of whining about how offensive it was why not address the truth of the matter, when Jordan and Bird were playing there weren't very many really good white defenders.

There was a time when blacks weren't playing in the NBA, they seemed more talented, but they explained that they weren't disciplined and didn't understand how to play a team game. That is extremely insulting, so you can be sure the blacks who did get into the league suffered a lot of insults. If you dish it out you better be able to take it as well.

Bird never guarded Jordan. He didn't have the physical skills to guard him. He was far too slow of foot. And basketball is a team sport. Individual match-ups aren't as important as team chemistry. And while Bird was king of the trash talkers, he wasn't a racist.
I'd put both in my top 5 of all time.

Choosing Bird is a very tough choice since we also have Lebron James at the same position. Still I don't think MJ and Lebron would work well on the same team. My top 5 -- Magic (a 6-9 point guard caused all kinds of matchup problems), MJ, Pippen, Bill Russell, and Kareem. (this team would be the most dominant defensive team in history, you have three great scorers, one great playmaker, and all of these guys were winners who knew how to win. I like putting Pippen on Lebron with Jordan swiping, and if they try to do a pick to get Pippen off who does he get, Magic? Jordan? Russell? Many people do not remember how utterly dominant Kareem was when he was younger. The sky hook was unstoppable. All five of these guys are hall of fame defenders. (Bird would be my 6th man).

It's hard to go wrong with any of those guys. Pippen was a great defender but not a great scorer. He was overrated in my opinion. The rest are hard to argue with. My five would be Jabbar, Magic, Bird, Tim Duncan, and MJ.

Yes, but the best five team would not be the best 5. I agree that Duncan switching for Russell is a possibility, but I like his ten rings because it tells me he will sacrifice his ego to win. Jabbar has to get the ball, and you only need 3 scorers. Pippen wasn't a great creator of his own opportunity, but he was a great sidekick and worked great with MJ. The two of them were both hall of fame defenders. He practiced everyday by defending MJ. Magic was undefensible because he usually had 5-6 inches on his defender and he could make a hook shot. Jabbar could create his own shot and of course MJ could. That is much more than you need on any offense. My feeling is if you don't pick Lebron then Pippen would be the best guy to defend him. I know Jabbar and Magic can work together and I know MJ and Pippen can work together and I know Russell will do whatever it takes to win.

If MJ, Jabbar or Magic is taking the shot you need two guys willing to put back the rebounds and that is Russell and Pippen. Also Pippen is a better defender than Bird. If Bird is my sixth man he could come in for anyone (except Jabbar). But if he comes in for Magic or MJ you don't lose any of your scoring umph.

Your reasoning is sound. I was just picking the best at 5 different positions. If I was picking for chemistry, I would follow a strategy similar to yours.

Funny. Trash talking me are you? "whining?" What a crock. Jordan himself said if he had four players like Danny Ange, that team would go undefeated. Seems like Jordan thought four white guys and him could win it all, huh?

Instead of whining that Jordans comment, trash talk or not, was a racial slur, and no big deal, just admit the truth. As well, pretending that it would not matter if a white player said the same about black players wouldn't cause a ruckus, just admit the truth. By the way, I searched for some of Birds trash talk, he was quite adept at it, and the worst thing I found was he once told a college player.......... Young fellow, seems like '84 doesn't it......

WOW.......that's the worst? Bird had so many "dirty tricks" he used to guard opposing players that was enough to make the difference. Jordan commented on those tricks more than once. Like when a player tried to make a move, Bird would pull on their shorts, throwing them off their game. Horrible stuff like that!

Of course there was a time when blacks were not prevalent in the NBA. For that matter at any level of various Sports...........College or Pros. Now though, at both the College and Pro levels, they are the dominate race on pretty much every team. No problems from me with that because the Coaches are playing the best players they can.

It does amuse me, however, to think what would happen if "Affirmative Action" standards were applied to College and Pro Sports..........

Birds trash talk recorded for History.........

(excerpt)

Feeling frisky after an assertive initial scrimmage, Mashburn recalled that Rodney Rodgers dared to poke the bear: "We get back to the hotel. Rodney Rogers says something to… it’s a group of them, it’s Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, everybody’s shooting the shit. And Rodney Rogers said, ‘Hey Larry, you ain’t hit a jumper since ’84.’"

"The next day, we came in, and I’d never seen this, and this was when I was like, ‘This is a different breed,’" said Mashburn. "Magic Johnson fed Larry Bird the ball probably about eight times in a row down court. Larry Bird got the ball on Rodney Rogers, and every time he was about to make a move, he told him what he was going to do."

Naturally, Bird connected on each shot and before exiting the floor told Rodgers: "Young fella, look like ’84, huh?"
