Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE’s ambassador to the United States, confirmed on Thursday that the country’s first female fighter pilot was involved in recent action against ISIL.
He discussed the UAE’s commitment in combating ISIL and fighting extremism on the live-broadcast American television show Morning Joe, a weekday morning talk show on MSNBC.
Mr Al Otaiba also confirmed that Major Mariam Al Mansouri, 35, an F-16 pilot, will lead the air strike missions on ISIL.
“I can officially confirm that the UAE strike mission on Monday night was led by female fighter pilot Mariam Al Mansouri,” he said.
“She is a fully qualified, highly trained, combat-ready pilot and she is on a mission.”
The UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain and the United States have allied to launch a series of air strikes against members of ISIL in Syria to combat extremists.

Note -

Posting this piece of news doesn't take away the service that the other pilots and military analysts have done.

They all need to be commended for their service. I just thought this piece of news was very interesting seeing the conservative nature of most Arab countries regarding women, to not only have a female combat pilot, but a pilot in a lead role.

Kudos to this brave woman and may God help those people working against this evil of ISIS.

I saw this and I was quite amazed. I think that from what I have read, the UAE is a bit more liberal than some of the other Muslim countries. But I don't mind standing corrected, and the picture I saw of the pilot, she was wearing a hijab, which is quite conservative. But not a burka, I guess!

I read an article about the 7000 strong young Kurdish female fighting force against ISIS. It seems a poetic justice these women strike terror into the Isis militants as they believe that if they are killed by a woman, they will go to hell.

I relished that irony too. Praying for the Kurds.
