Defense secretary takes issue with 3-year timeline in Obama’s ISIS plan

New Defense Secretary Ash Carter already is showing an independent streak, speaking out against the three-year timeline included in President Obama’s formal request for military force against the Islamic State.

Testifying before a House subcommittee on Wednesday, Carter called that timeline “political.”

“I wouldn't assure anyone that this will be over in three years or that the campaign will be completed in three years,” he said.
Funny thing. Those military, intel and ex-military and ex-intel types? They just don't make good lapdogs.

Even President Obama doesn't think it will be over in three years. The one press conference that I heard POTUS speak about the three year time authorization he said that it intentionally only covered one year into the next administration at which time that administration could seek to extend it if they saw fit.

Sect. of Defense better get in line soon or he will be the latest Sect. of Defense to be out of the job. There have been a few in the last six years.

Obama is probably looking for a replacement already.

I'm still trying to figure out why he axed Hagel. Hagel did very well.
Same reason he's today going through old resumés from the last time he had to pick a SecDef -- they aren't lapdogs.

Don't you know? Obama's smarter than everybody. He doesn't need a cabinet -- he can run the government by himself, in between rounds of golf.

I wouldn't call Hagel a lapdog, but I never seen him snub Obama. At least not publicly anyways.

Hagel I thought did well in our affairs with Asia. He was doing a good job with Korea and China, and he was a key player in aiding the Philippines after those typhoons to help our brothers. I would think if he were still interested to get him back in the Asia-American affairs.

Neither would I. That's my point. None of them kowtow to Obama, so he has to fire them.

I don't think he did, at least publicly. But he didn't kowtow either. At least three times he contradicted the White House line that al-Qaeda was on the run, the terrorists were isolated with bin Laden's death, ISIS "is the JV," etc. So -- phffft! Off with his head!

I think he's had enough of being undercut by Obama, just like Gates and Panetta before him.
