Letter Kills But The Spirit Gives Life

Too much Greek and Hebrew
filled my mind of neverending morphologies
There's a library in my head
full of history and dates
to demonstrate my intelligence
and my capacity of winning every debate

In my attempt to be the best theologian
I turned the simple into a maze of concepts
I tried to conceptualize faith and I failed
In my attempt to create mine own Bible
I forgot one thing all these years
that letter kills but the Spirit gives life

All this talk of hermeneutics and apologetics
it's getting me prouder than before
instead of using them as a way to Jesus
I used them to turn people to me
Too much horses, crowns and dragons
led me to create a fancy fairy tale
How hard is for me is to understand
that the letter kills but the Spirit gives life

When will I learn
that there are some things I will never understand
When will I accept
that I can't turn my hair gray
nor change people's mind at my pace

It's time for me to kneel down in prayer
to recognize I do not know it all
and what I know I can put it to practice
to become a better man of God
It's time to learn again if necessary
to go back to the basics if I have to
to finally understand
that the letter kills but the Spirit gives life

I confused wisdom with history analysis
and intelligence with encyclopedia answers
Of making many books there is no end
and much study wearies the body
said one unhappy king who thought his mind
could handle one complicated situation
God was against to from the start

I turned prophecies into future telling shows
where the most tragic one wins people's attention
When I will realize
that the letter kills but the Spirit gives life

It's time for me to shut my mouth
and listen to the gentle whisper of God
to anoint me in tears and anguish
to make me understand
that the letter kills but the Spirit gives life
