SACRED TRUST
Coral Gathman Cook

Of the issues of life and death I am weary
And can no longer continue to strive
I must submit to the what is in the due course of things
And choose
There is a sacred trust which I must not violate
Even to flee pain
It is the trust of God's gift
Created in me
From the foundation of the world
When I was created
Deep inside the Spirit of God
The commitment to use that gift
To reach others
With the rich blessing of God's love
Is the commitment which holds me here
The pain shall all pass in due course
If not here, then in eternity
But my child's soul
Shall live on forever
And so shall the souls of all those I love
I am a true wretch, I guess
Only if I fail to consider them first
If the pain does not pass
But continues in its intensity
For so long as I walk upon this earth
Then isn't that so small a price to pay
For the potential benefit
Of so great a gift
As God has given me?
What is the binding responsibility
Which accompanies such a talent?
Am I in debt
To all who stand in need
Of this gift
But who are not blessed with it themselves?
Is the true worth of my soul
Then measured by how much of it I give away?
Is nothing mine which I possess
But God Himself
And salvation
Through His blessed Son?
Dear precious Lord
Help me see my life as you see it
That I might never again
Hold it too dear
Or too hastily toss it off
If I am going to put to death
Any part of myself
Then should it not be
My members in the flesh
And should I not present myself
Unto God
A living sacrifice?
For is it not He
Who should decide
How to use my remaining days
And when to cast off this wretched shell
Of what I once was?
Can I ever hope for Jesus to be close to me
In my distress?
Might it be that God Himself
Would bring comfort for my pain
And look upon me now in love?
Perhaps the day of restoration for me is here
And my heart can make its peace with God
Perhaps there's Balm in Gilead
For my troubled soul
