Barak is going out with 10,000 men of Israel, but coming up against Sisera's 900 chariots of iron, of Sisera, Judges 4:2 "...he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel." Barak was coming up against a champion with 900 ancient tanks, a seemingly impossible task, but Sisera was in for a surprise.
The name Deborah means "bee," like a honey bee, a woman of wisdom and leadership chosen by God to prophesy, and Barak was a man of faith, who responded to Deborah's "hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded" in obedience, saying I will go, believing Deborah that the Lord had delivered Sisera into his hand.
Of the hopeless battle Barak had to fight against Sisera?
Judges 4:16 But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
Deborah sings of the battle,
Judges 5:20-21 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera. The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, thou hast trodden down strength.
The Lord turned the battlefield into a swamp by rain. According to Josephus, a violent storm of hail beat in their faces and made it a rout, disabling Sisera's army, driving them back so that they became a very easy prey to the army of Israel, Barak's army able to drive into the midst of Sisera's army and put them to sword. Deborah's words were made good: "The Lord has delivered them into thy hand; it is now in thy power to do what thou wilt with them."
Can you imagine how many stars there are in the glory? All the stars were lined up against the Canaanite general Sisera, "the stars in their courses fought against Sisera." The fight was over before it began, Sisera headed for a collision with God.
Nobody, no puny man, no matter how formidable they may seem in this world, can stand against God. All of the universe is against the man who is against God, Romans 8:28 in reverse, all things working for bad for those who are against God's purpose. Sin can't win, faith can't fail, and this was a battle of faith.
When God is on your side, you are programmed for victory. It may not be apparent right away, but wait and victory will be yours, for, in time, you are sure to win. Consider the words of this poem by Emily P. Bissell:
Wave and Tide
On the far reef the breakers
Recoil in shattered foam,
While still the sea behind them
Urges its forces home;
Its song of triumph surges
O'er all the thunderous din,
The wave may break in failure,
But the tide is sure to win!
The reef is strong and cruel;
Upon its jagged wall
One wave, a score, a hundred,
Broken and beaten fall;
Yet in defeat they conquer,
The sea comes flooding in,
Wave upon wave is routed,
But the tide is sure to win!
O mighty sea! thy message
In clanging spray is cast;
Within God's plan of progress
It matters not at last
How wide the shores of evil,
How strong the reefs of sin,
The wave may be defeated,
But the tide is sure to win!
On the far reef the breakers
Recoil in shattered foam,
While still the sea behind them
Urges its forces home;
Its song of triumph surges
O'er all the thunderous din,
The wave may break in failure,
But the tide is sure to win!
The reef is strong and cruel;
Upon its jagged wall
One wave, a score, a hundred,
Broken and beaten fall;
Yet in defeat they conquer,
The sea comes flooding in,
Wave upon wave is routed,
But the tide is sure to win!
O mighty sea! thy message
In clanging spray is cast;
Within God's plan of progress
It matters not at last
How wide the shores of evil,
How strong the reefs of sin,
The wave may be defeated,
But the tide is sure to win!
