Help me out here. What is it with guys and gaming?

I like games where I get to shoot stuff because...well...because I get to SHOOT stuff. :D And I like Wii fitness/dance because I can actually move around and participate. But I really don't get it the addiction.

Maybe its like guys not understanding why women like shoes... :)

Since God has build us guys with a "white knight syndrome", what better way to play the hero (and win) than in the wonderful world of video games? lol

Well... Personally I'm a goal oriented, adventurous person and when given 3 months where I'd rather not be outside much longer than I need to be (thank you 5' of snow) gaming is a pretty good option. Plenty of action and lots of games are designed in such a way the the goals are perfectly attainable in such a way that they draw you in. With a lot of the subscription based games especially, there is added incentive to spend a lot of time playing.

When I was in a relationship, my gaming time went down a lot, so if you're implying that we can't be pulled away, it's not true of all of us. I spent probably 30 hours or so gaming during the winter months when I wasn't in a relationship. Probably only a couple hours a week when I was in a relationship. And even then, the types of games I played ended up being the games she had already been playing before we started dating.

As for shoes... I don't get it, so I can't compare them sorry!

I'm way too extroverted to play any game by myself for too long. I can't play Solitaire and its pretty much a chore to me. Well, pretty much any game with a pure aggregation of numerical values, bores the life out of me, multiplayer or not. See: WoW.

At the end of the day, If I'm playing a game, its a good chance I'm doing it with other people. (preferably in the room) So, I like Wii games and MW2/3 but, it feels about the same as going outside and playing touch football or sitting around playing Mafia. I like cooperation and teamwork.

The Total War series is my worst addiction. Taking over the world is too much fun for an hour's sitting.

I like games, almost any kind (except sports, those are blaah) although its been a while since I don't play because I have other things to do.
But I agree with you Julianna, almost all guys are addicted to games, my brother loves to play with his PS3, my oldest brother used to be like that too when he was younger, and I have many male friends who love videogames, compared to women, men are the ones who play videogames the most.

I have my theories about this enigma , I think that maybe they like the feeling of power because they can do so many things on those games?
From what I've seen with my brother, I learned that he kinda feels powerful lol, when he played Call of Duty, it was like he was the one leading the troops in a REAL war... you should have seen him. I was like man, thats a game, get over it. :) (but to be honest i played sometimes too, and I do like those games, sometimes I got as excited as my brother haha )

I grew up on RPGs (an almost dead genre, now), which to me, playing one is like reading a good book. They have characters I grow attached to, good dialogue, interesting stories and plot twists, and their fantasy themes often coupled with elements from modern culture make for an engrossing experience! All in all, it's a nice distraction from reality.

I'm currently working on Lunar. :D But seriously, if games like Chrono Trigger, Xenosaga, and some of the older Final Fantasy titles were still in good circulation/heavy production, I would probably be just as much of a gamer now as I was 5-10 years ago.

Nailed it.

That's definately one of the things I loved the most about FPS games. Day of Defeat:Source and Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory.

My username is actually what I used for playing games.

Day of Defeat Realism is an awesome mod. T/Sgt. J. Diggs of the 135th Airborne Division reporting for duty!

My brother and I have run several clans(gaming groups) and rented servers. Times were good and fun, but alas they were fruitless. Glad those days are gone.

Being in a position of command is excellent. In the realism mod you would set up your squads in various areas of the map to defend certain locations, each person got one life and limited ammo. Weapons were restricted, you could only have so many of specialty weapons. Commanding a squad on microphone at 3am in the morning... textbook example of addiction.

Sgt J.Diggs? Wow you can do that? haha Ive seen my brother playing online, but I didnt know you could actually command people and make strategies. Now I want to play :) haha. I like a lot of genres, from the Mario Kart type to the Call of Duty type...but one that I like so much because of the story, and also because of the strategies you have to use is Metal Gear, the series. I think that game is just awesome. Another of my favorites is the Zelda series, I so love the stories involved.

And now I oficially feel like a boy :). Let me go hug my huge collection of hello kitties in my pink bedroom.

I don't know what it is. It could be the competitive aspect and trying to outwit others and just the thrill of winning. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has just or about to be released. Time to move on to the next chapter me thinks.

Simple minded creatures, amused by simple minded things.... (sorry guys)
I used to believe that too. I prided myself on not owning any shooter games until a few years ago when I caved in and bought my first one...then another, and another, and another.. :D

Its got something to do with the suspense of not knowing where the enemy is and the thrill of being able to outwit your opponent on a battlefield. To a bystander it just looks like walking around and shooting, but you actually have to use a lot of strategy to do well on the battlefield.

I am okay with their games if they are okay with my hats - LOL. As long as it doesn't come to the point where gaming trumps relationship - uh uh!

I think this is a lot of it. Men have a hero/domination instinct and video games are a great way to satisfy it. Well, enough to keep us from actually going out and doing it haha.

In some cases it could also be an escape from reality. I've gone down that road before.
