A big book now is 'Not A Fan'. It's the latest craze in American Christianity. I guess the main idea is that we're not just fans of Jesus and such.

What I find troubling is that Not A Fan, sells gear/merchandise, so we can tell everyone how much a fan we are of not being a fan.

It's ironic on one hand and troubling on the other. Because for some reason it's like we always have to merchandise our 'Jesus' stuff.

If this thing is about not being a fan, then should we really sell gear just like they do for fans of sports teams, celebrities and such? It seems self defeating to proclaim how you're not a fan, by wearing shirts that proclaim you are a fan of not being fan.

They should really say "Not JUST a fan." And have Jesus mentioned on there somewhere.

I like this idea :) it's like the whole KONY thing, you can get the wrong misconception that you are actually SUPPORTING Kony, not against him. But I guess it's all about gettin people to ask...

OK...now I'm confused. I'm not a fan of too much thinking before 10 AM. Will be back once the caffeine kicks in.

Pretty sure you can be; in their words
'a... completely. committed. follower.'
And a fan aswell, why make it so overly complicated...

I always assumed the "not a fan" meant of this world. To an unbeliever though I don't know what would go through their head. I'm not a fan of wearing a shirt that says not a fan because it is not clear what I am not a fan of...therefore I am not a fan of the not a fan stuff. :D :D

I do however like wearing shirts like these

This was copied from their site:

not a fan.
Those three little words "invite" questions. For example people might say, "so, what are you not a fan of?". And now you have an opportunity to begin a conversation. You have an opportunity to tell them not "what" but "who" you follow and why.

It seems the merchandise is intended to be a conversation starter unlike most christian based merchandise that is blatantly of faith and not so likely to start a conversation as a result.

From my understanding, "Not a fan" refers to Jesus himself. The idea being I'm not simply a fan of Jesus, I'm an actual follower of Jesus. I haven't read the book however, from what I've heard, I agree with the message.

An awesome book along these lines that I recommend to all to read is "Radical" by David Platt, a Baptist pastor from Birmingham AL. In it he talks about how the American Dream has become an idol in the hearts of many within the church and how, in many ways, it has become a modern hinderance to fulfilling the Great Commission.
