Wink Family Hierarchy

(Seoulsearch, you are so going down. I don't have a day job, so I can start threads all day long!)

Growing up, there were two tables at family events - the kids' table and the adults' table. So all of my cousins and I could eat and talk about kid things, without annoying our parents too much. And then of course, you assume that when you grow up, you'll move to the adults table.

For some of my single friends, they got to move to the adults table once the other siblings or cousins started having families. In my family (although there's not really tables anymore - usually just paper plates and gathering in the living room at family functions), my cousins are almost all married and have kids. My aunt has started to lump my sister and I into the same category as THEIR kids. She'll say stuff like "ok, girls, get in the picture, I want a picture of all the grandkids!" So it's me, my sister who's two years older, and a bunch of toddlers and babies.

How about you? As a single adult, where do you fall in your family's hierarchy? Are you still at the proverbial kids table until you get married? Have you moved up by default since others have gotten married? Or is your family as... ahem.. unique.. as mine?

(By the way, I'm older than my aunt's youngest son, who is also not married, but he's not considered a 'grandkid'. Of course, this is the same woman who's been telling my mom for years that she's not really part of the family because she married into it...)

If I have to lose to anyone, Musical... (although me hates the thought of losin'!) at least it's an honor to be losing to you! And yes, I'm jealous that you don't have a day job!

Your post made me laugh out loud, but I (maybe fortunately) can't speak from any experience on this one--my Mom is an only child, and we always went to my grandparents on her side for the holidays. Even then, I have a small family--my Dad has one brother and they only have one child (we tended to isolate ourselves from the rest of the family--too much drama and a down-the-line cousin who once stole money from my Mom).

However, my Grandpa and I would always playfully fight over who got more dessert... if that kind of counts...

And, if you ever come hang with me and my family... I PROMISE I'll save you a seat... at the adult table.

lol, I do look for the good. My sister gets livid over it, but I just laugh to myself about it because honestly, it's really funny!

It was especially funny the year my aunt gave me one of those fuzzy coloring pictures for Christmas...

*confused* A fuzzy coloring picture??? I'm unfamiliar with that (and a little bit jealous.)

Is it some kind of "Chia Pet"-type coloring page or what... It grows fuzz??

No, it's black and white and the black part is fuzzy and you color the white part. Seriously, go to the section of Walmart with markers and things - you'll find them.

It's black and white and fuzzy but you only color the white part??? *more confused than ever*

I think I qualify as someone who would be banished to the kids' tables... seeing as I obviously (and very badly) need to get some of my children's pop culture references updated...

All right!!! I am POSITIVE this will surely get me an invite to the adult table... I mean, I'll be able to impress them by saying, "I know what a fuzzy coloring picture is!" SCORE!!
