Hey Everyone,

So I'm just curious. How many people can confess to clicking on this thread just because they wanted to read what the "hot rumor" was?

Admittedly, this thread is an experiment. I've seen lots of people write about the evils of gossip... So I was just curious as to how many people would see a title like this and want to know what the supposed rumor was, even on a Christian website. When given the chance to participate in gossip... what will people actually do?

I'm guessing that if someone is truly against gossip, they won't even bother clicking on the title and we won't even know who they are. Or will they say they did it in order to tell others how evil gossip is? (Um... ok...) Will people even admit to reading this thread?

Just curious. I'm always interested in what people say vs. what people actually do. And, for the record, if I hadn't written the thread, I would have clicked on it too.

(The poll is multiple choice and anonymous... But I'd love to know your thoughts on the subject as well. :))

Seoulsearch, I clicked on your thread because I thought the complete title was going to say "I heard this really hot rumor that Descyple is single and available" - I guess I was wrong (this time - lol).

But seriously, although I clicked on your "rumor" thread, I am the kind of person that not only does not like gossiping about people behind their backs, I don't even like to be around people who gossip. I find it quite irritating, if I can be completely honest. Also, I have discovered that a lot of gossip that I did hear about other people ended up being false accusations. So not only is gossiping irritating, it also proves to be often inaccurate, and therefore meaningless.

But at the same time I make sure I don't "talk" about gossipers, because like you stated that would make me guilty of gossiping myself. Instead, I just remain silent and point at gossipers and tap my nose when they walk by - lol.

Well as long as you have a system of identification worked out, Descyple! Lol!! By the way, I WOULD tell all the ladies what a nice, handsome guy you are... but that would be gossiping (does it still count if I tell everyone that right here in front of you instead of behind your back?)

And you are right about most "rumors" being untrue. I especially dislike tabloids, though I get pulled in like most others. I do ask God to remind me to pray for the people I hear about on the radio and TV, whether it's a celebrity, politician, or victim (or all three!!)

I'm curious to see how many views this thread will get vs. people who actually answer/post--for instance, if there are like 150 views and you and I are the only ones who answer... What does that say about us?! Lol! :D

So, basically your thread title is a stumbling block leading people into sin who expect a saucy rumor. That would be the necessary conclusion if I understand your reasoning.

Will people even admit to reading this thread?
I was never here.

Over the previous summer I pondered the question, "What counts as gossip?" I can't say I came to a lot of solid conclusions. One of the things that really troubled me was, "is it gossip to simply talk about someone who isn't present?"

I thought the title was some kind of clever topic, and not actually about rumors

Just about anything in life can be seen as a stumbling block. It's what we do with it that counts. Do we run right to it or choose to sidestep it? Do we learn from it and make a better choice the next time?

Psychology was my interest in school (was working on a Master's). As someone who was raised in church all my life, as I wrote, I have a special interest in what people say ("The love of God!" "Jesus forgives!" "Everyone is welcome in the house of the Lord!") vs. what people actually do ("God loves everyone... but some more than others." "Jesus forgives... but only if you meet certain conditions." "Everyone is welcome in the house of the Lord... now get out of my seat. And by the way, you're not dressed right/don't make enough money/aren't the right color or good enough to be here.")

The number one reason I hear as to why people don't go to church is that "churches are full of hypocrites who judge others but do all the same things themselves".

I'm interested in changing that. And yes, that includes in my own life and heart as well.

Seoulsearch, you have my full permission to post "gossip compliments" about me (behind my back and even in front of me). In fact, I will even give you some suggested compliments about me to write (after all, who could better compliment me than myself - okay, that sounds disturbing - lol).

By the way, I heard a guy named Zeroturbulence say CC has live chat rooms! Spread the rumor!!!

Actually, I heard that the people in the chat rooms are condescending when it comes to us forum folks (oops, did I just gossip there?). Actually that's okay, because I heard that the chat room people can't read (okay, now I am really gossiping - lol).

Ah... good old fashioned honesty. Maybe I'll write my next "stumbling block thread" about that. :D And yes, I did answer my own poll, and my answer was that I wanted to read a hot rumor just as much as anyone else, plain as that!

Ha ha ha, Descyple. Now you sound like a celebrity who's orchestrating his own press conference... telling me what I can and can't say about you and how to always present you in the best light!! :) And is it gossip if I have the person's public permission???!!

By the way, I heard a guy named Zeroturbulence say CC has live chat rooms! Spread the rumor!!!

Wow, a Chat Vs. Forum War... You read it right here...So I guess this thread really is about a hot rumor after all! I think for once I'm gonna stay out of the fight. :) (I sometimes go and hang out in chat just to listen, but never type or say much. However, as everyone's noticed, you can't shut me up in the forums! I like it because I get to think for a while before I say something... and if not, there's always the delete button.) :p

I listen to rumors, but I don't spread them. That sounds like I go searching for rumors... It's more like people talk about other people, but I'm not one to take said information and spread it. I suck at quoting people unless it is written down or recorded by some medium. Makes passing any message seem a little more legitimate if you ask me. Now that makes it sound like I spread information no one should know about.

I just don't spread rumors because I'd rather not have any blame or any issues lead back to me. I actually believe in doing unto others as I like to be done to myself.

I see the word rumors and absolutely nothing is being said about my perfectly chiseled abs or my gun show, not to mention the fact that I like long walks on the beach and just spending time staying up late just to talk all about the other person...Lamest thread ever.

Sorry Kim :)
