I was taught that two spaces were to go after a period. This article says we should use one. Apparently the two space rule was adopted due to how fonts appeared with typewriters.

Never Put Two Spaces After A Period - Business Insider

Most ordinary people would know the one-space rule, too, if it weren't for a quirk of history. In the middle of the last century, a now-outmoded technology—the manual typewriter—invaded the American workplace. To accommodate that machine's shortcomings, everyone began to type wrong. And even though we no longer use typewriters, we all still type like we do. (Also see the persistence of the dreaded Caps Lock key.)

The problem with typewriters was that they used monospaced type—that is, every character occupied an equal amount of horizontal space. This bucked a long tradition ofproportional typesetting, in which skinny characters (like I or 1) were given less space than fat ones (like W or M).

Monospaced type gives you text that looks "loose" and uneven; there's a lot of white space between characters and words, so it's more difficult to spot the spaces between sentences immediately. Hence the adoption of the two-space rule—on a typewriter, an extra space after a sentence makes text easier to read. Here's the thing, though: Monospaced fonts went out in the 1970s.

One space after a full-stop. Lots of space between someone and their period.

Correct me here, but it used to be 2 spaces after a period; then in the early 90's, the MLS changed to accommodate internet citing; therefore, the rule became 1 space after a period.

We were taught in my generation that it was always two spaces, however when I submitted my manuscripts to publishers, I was informed that it's one. Since then, I never double space after a period. I kind of like it that way. :) Whenever I see my supervisor double space after a period, I cringe. LOL.

Hmmm...hadn't heard that one. I still do two spaces after a colon and single space after a semicolon. To change that will take some training and getting used to. :)

I was taught two spaces as well. Still do it out of habit. No one cares, because I'm not submitting any major papers.

Rules change, rules change. But I don't care, OXFORD COMMA FOR LIFE, YO!

I learned with two spaces, and my fingers refuse to change. I can be THINKING ABOUT IT while typing and still do two.

Stupid rules.

I was taught to do only one. When I do two by mistake and I notice, I have to go back and correct it.

Right Tintin, the new n' modern style says 1 space after a full-stop. It used to be 2 spaces though.
