How many spaces go after a period? One or two?

The rule is this:

If the wife is having her period, walking backwards ten spaces, then turn and run. Come back in 4 days time.

Only make contact through chocolate deliveries.

Yes, that's very true. I used two spaces after full-stops in my later primary school days (when computers were introduced into classrooms). But by high school (1997-2001), I was only told to use one space after full-stops.

When I was writing professionally, whatever my copy editor told me was the law. I never knew who my CE would be for any particular article. It was a bit like russian roulette. I was never asked to use two spaces after a period though, even the biggest grammar Nazi's I worked with never brought that up.
