How about considering each entry as it would apply to a godly Bachelor. Then DJ can substitute his name for the word "Bachelor." Deal? :)

Mature masculinity expresses itself not in the demand to be served, but in the strength to serve and to sacrifice for the good of woman.
Jesus came to serve, and to serve by way of the cross. Therefore, a godly bachelor is masculine when he finds the strength to sacrifice his time in serving other for their good.
Mature masculinity does not assume the authority of Christ over woman, but advocates it.
A godly bachelor is masculine when he utilizes the authority of Christ to defend others.

Mature masculinity does not presume superiority, but mobilizes the strengths of others.
A godly bachelor is masculine when he encourages others to be strong for the glory of God.

Mature masculinity does not have to initiate every action, but feels the responsibility to provide a general pattern of initiative.
A godly bachelor is masculine... I didn't understand this one... :)

Mature masculinity accepts the burden of the final say in disagreements between husband and wife, but does not presume to use it in every instance.
A godly bachelor is masculine when he is accepts responsibility for the outcomes of any disputes he has participated in.

etc, etc.

In some cultures, animal husbandry is indeed one of the hallmarks of a strong man.

And if economic collapse comes, it may once again in "civilized" countries!

Always know how to work with your hands, even if you do a white collar job.

You spend a lifetime of not getting ripped off by "professionals" who inflate estimates thinking you don't know squat, and when something breaks at 2am, you can swoop in and save the day.

That and you don't do something foolish like hang heavy things from nails just sticking in the drywall - because real studs know that you put screws into studs and then the job is done forever or as long as the structure is still standing.

And if things get bad, you can do a lot better than everyone else who can barely turn a wrench. Some farming skills to round out the package and you can put food on the table when everybody else is struggling.

But it seems that for either sex, these skills are not valued as much as raw earning power, which is a shame.

Well, my Dad would say, "If you look into your heart and find nothing wrong there, then there's something wrong with your eyes."

From a conservative Baptist perspective, mature masculinity is a man who brings Jesus Christ with him wherever he goes. ...just thinking out loud... :)

I'd argue that's the mark of any mature Christian though, it's not gender specific.

My temporary dyslexia just struck again.

In my haste to try to take in all the posts here before being attacked by my nephews, I read this post as, "Is number 8, takedowns of a UFO."

I was thinking, "ANY man who could take down a UFO... has gotta be pretty darn masculine..."

And knowing what to DO with a UFO after he's taken it down would surely be a mark of maturity.

True, but I'm the sister; it's up to the brother to lead, and it's up to the sister to gracefully follow. ...just saying. :)

I know how to handle this!

There is some strong evidence to suggest that aliens are really demons... so... Christ kind of handles that problem, at least when the little green men are down on the ground. You'd look funny yelling to the sky about Jesus trying to take down a UFO, so maybe wait until it lands.

If for some reason I'm wrong on that one, all one would need to do is beat up an alien. That can't be too hard can it, they're supposed to be little grey squirts with big bulbous eyes aren't they? Just shine a really bright flashlight in their eyes and they'll probably leave you alone.

Now, where's my mag light... I'll just, add that to my list of manly qualities.

LOL. Frankly, I'd be scared of a dude taking down a UFO. I'd be like, brother, are you sure you're not Klaatu and your pet is not Gort?

Here are the nine marks of mature masculinity.

  1. Mature masculinity expresses itself not in the demand to be served, but in the strength to serve and to sacrifice for the good of woman.
  2. Mature masculinity does not assume the authority of Christ over woman, but advocates it.
  3. Mature masculinity does not presume superiority, but mobilizes the strengths of others.
  4. Mature masculinity does not have to initiate every action, but feels the responsibility to provide a general pattern of initiative.
  5. Mature masculinity accepts the burden of the final say in disagreements between husband and wife, but does not presume to use it in every instance.
  6. Mature masculinity expresses its leadership in romantic sexual relations [in marriage] by communicating an aura of strong and tender pursuit.
  7. Mature masculinity expresses itself in a family by taking the initiative in disciplining the children when both parents are present and a family standard has been broken.
  8. Mature masculinity is sensitive to cultural expressions of masculinity and adapts to them (where no sin is involved) in order to communicate to a woman that a man would like to relate not in any aggressive or perverted way, but with maturity and dignity as a man.
  9. Mature masculinity recognizes that the call to leadership is a call to repentance and humility and risk-taking.
