the starches & carbs are holding you back. get an exercise bike if possible & use the "pyramid" method of biking. that is starting out slow, building up little by little, get to max, then slow back down at an easy rate. grapefruit & blueberries are fat burners. eating the right amount at the right time is very important. have a time span of at least 4 hours of digestion before you go to bed. i make it 4 & a half. America has a terrible habit of "snacking then napping". it's the opposite that's healthy: nap, then snack!!!! supplemental to this is most Americans can't sleep properly. going to bed on an empty stomach is the best thing to do. when people sleep on a full stomach, the food digests much slower, your heart has to work twice as fast & you wake up groggy. a newer type of eating in recent decades is 5 meals a day but small portions. any 1 meal involving overeating is hazardous. people think that if they skipped a meal, they have to overeat on the next. not true. your body is still only going to use what it needs. blessings to you on your weight loss.

Great advice! As I've gotten older (in my 50s now), it's harder to keep the fat off. I've had to cut back on the starches and carbs, and I eat more whole grained breads and cereals.

My biggest issue is alcohol. Even in moderation, it is probably my biggest adversary for weight gain. Beer is the worst.

I've also had to change my work to be more physical in nature. Sitting at a desk all day makes it nearly impossible for me to keep the weight under control.

Best wishes in your quest to stay in shape. I wish I could tell you it gets easier as we get older, but it certainly hasn't been that way for me so far. I have to step on the scale regularly and then make the necessary adjustments in food/alcohol consumption and physical activity.

I'm not a drinker myself, so this may be a silly question...

Wouldn't vodka or whiskey get the job done faster, with less weight gain?

Besides, beer smells like horse pee... At least American beer does. I haven't been anywhere else though.

Yes, for me, whiskey certainly does "the job faster" if getting a buzz is the goal. It's really an acquired taste, and both Lisa and my family are social drinkers (yes, we cross the line at times...).

I drink craft American beer brewed here in West Michigan. IPAs are my favorite--heavy on the hops with a bitterness that takes some getting used to. It's like drinking liquid bread with a kick, awesome on a hot summer day!

& i wish you "happy health". i was always active in my youth & adulthood. when younger, i used to eat 2 breakfast's, 2 lunches & 2 dinners + snack in between!. i always weighed the same since high school: 185. as far as drinking, i WAS like my dad & brothers, could drink 30-40-drinks in 4 hours & never stagger or stammer!

Hey Brother SilverFox! For what it's worth, if you want to get to a better weight, I can tell you some simple practices that work for pretty much everyone that isn't going to be a workout warrior or count calories...

1. Smaller Portions/ Eat Slower -- You'd be very surprised how satisfied you may be with only eating aprx 1/2 the portion of food you currently eat for your 3 squares. It's been confirmed it takes about 20 minutes for you to feel full from the food you eat. So, if you thoroughly chew, taste and enjoy your food and take your time between bites... you may feel totally fine with that smaller portion. Eat whatever you want, have the other half for lunch or whenever.

2. Drink Full Glass of Water Before Meal -- You already know we need aprx 8 glasses of water, so a full glass (I drink room temp) before eating makes good sense... and not only helps digestion, but helps you feel full sooner.

3. Have a Salad with Dinner -- If you don't have salads with dinner or other meals, you should seriously consider starting. Micro-nutrients and fiber from raw vegetables we get in salads and dressings (balsamic vinegar dressing) help prevent many diseases, help you feel full and are generally low in calories. Half portion doesn't seem so crazy with small salad. I'm sure there's things you can add to make it more palatable like nuts, grapes/raisins, bacon, croutons, etc.

3.5 Eat Baby Carrots Between Meals -- If you're still hungry between or after meals, have some raw veggies you like or can stand: baby carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, red bell pepper strips, etc. Helps fill you up, extra fiber.

4. Exercise 20 Mins or More Daily -- Depending on what your work is... everybody needs to get their heart rate up for 15-20 mins to get the juices flowing everywhere in the body for proper function of everything in your body: digestive system and brain ... walking fast, dancing, whatever.

After years abroad I am still adjusting to my life here in the Philippines. I got nothing much to do and no many friends anymore here..,so I started befriending myself lol.... I've been walking on and off but I walk as much as I can like 3 to 4 times a week ...Sometimes I walk with a friend but most of the time I walk alone ☺️


The longest I have ever walk is 3.8 kilometers ☺️ it is addicting ☺️I don't know if that is the correct word....it feels great.

my longest walk is 12 miles walking home from a rock concert. my friends dad would drive us there but we always had to hitch-hike home!

Oh wow 12 miles walking with friends is fun 😊 😲 but I walked more than that I believe 🥴 when I was younger....hills,narrow roads and mountain tops down....I was referring to now, since I came back home....😅


I remember where my aunt lived....it was a remote village and no cars or buses to go there we must walk miles just to get there. Took us hours....we would climb hills,mountains and walked on muddy roads ( half body deep) lol. But I missed going there it was beautiful there ☺️

no, not imaginary at all! that is the truth. we were what you call "professional drinkers"! that stopped decades ago. & no, i'm not proud of it. there was only a select few, maybe 8 guys that could drink like that. we didn't let anyone in our group. didn't want to be responsible for accidents, lack of rides, nonprofessional behavior, etc.

I try to go running 5 days a week for about an hour or so. I'm oldish so I go pretty slow. The exercise helps me keep an appetite. I eat a lot of protein and natural fats, avoid sugars to the extent that it is reasonable.
