I always thought pumping gas, and opening doors was a chivalrous thing to do. Although I've gotten yelled at for holding a door for a young woman carrying a box a few years back in college.
I can just imagine it-- you could say, "I'm sorry" and then completely close the front dorm door, leaving her to fumble for her keys, then walk a head of her, and make sure to completely close the next door right in front of her.

It's probably not a good idea, but I can imagine it.

Here I'll finish the story presidente...it took her a good 2 minutes to get into the dorm building. I had a big smile on my face. What I should have said was NOTHING...what I did say was..."you know you would have saved yourself the trouble if you just thanked me and walked in". The response I got; the finger and a long list of curse words and a comment questioning my masculinity... is she still the jerk Julianna? I know I should have kept my mouth shut but I couldn't help it haha...I have more self control to keep my mouth shut in the present than I did back then

LOL! I'm thinking she would have gotten the point whether you'd said anything or not. :) I think we all wrestle with mouth control from time to time. :)

I was outside my house, refilling the motor oil in my car and WOW the amount of stares that I received from guys passing by. Whaaa...there is a GIRL under the hood!? Did I enter the twilight zone?!
I'm only willing to say this outright, because you've just switched your avvy back to your actual picture again (it's been a while).

I'm willing to bet some, if not many, of the stares...had nothing to do with the car at all. ^_-

Kidding aside, I am the same way, I would like to be 'rescued' by a man that knows his stuff
In some ways, I feel the same. I will mess stuff UP if I try to figure out something on my own that I have no clue about. I can think of a few times when I tried to be innovative, and then when my dad or my brother came to help (because I had tried it on my own before they got there), they would just shake their head and say "...No. Rachel. That's...not what you do."

Oh this isn't my actual picture. The one before that had the heading 'MEH.' was what I actually look like. Sorry to be deceitful :(

Mo0448 - I've never understood why girls/people get offended or upset when you open the door for them.

Reminds me of this:

Question to you guys....

I was outside my house, refilling the motor oil in my car and WOW the amount of stares that I received from guys passing by. Whaaa...there is a GIRL under the hood!? Did I enter the twilight zone?! What is with men being fascinated with a girl being able to pump her own gas, squeegee her own windows, or perform regular maintenance on a car!?
If guys are that fascinated with women pumping gas or squeegeeing their own windows, then the women in your country are worse off than here. Most women here don't know much about cars. But pumping gas or washing the windows is not a big deal. Car maintenance on the other hand....

I don't think its a macho issue. Its just more natural for men to be into mechanical things and women to shy away from them. Though, it can Become a macho issue once guys get heavily into cars. But, on the average, its just the common roles of each gender. Men do the car work, mow the yard, do handyman jobs, etc.... women clean the house, cook, grocery shop etc..

(before anyone 'corrects' me and feels the need to tell me its not that way in their house, spare me. Read my post and you'll see i said these are the general norms)

"I used to work for a mechanic honey, I can fix this right up.
Hand me the screwdriver.
And you... you just get back in the car and try to look pretty."

My manhood felt severely violated...
but as soon at the car started I didn't mind.
: )
I just hope, Maxwel, that as you sat there looking pretty... your shoes and purse actually matched your dress.

Girls don't like it when your accessories don't match. :p

I won't even ask which pair of dangly earrings you were wearing.

It probably depends on the man. Some men would probably like a woman who also knows something about cars. Some men would feel threatened if women know more about cars than they do. And some men may consider it to be unfeminine. That might make for an interesting survey.

And that reminds me. I need to get the oil changed. There is no place to do it at my apartment or I might just do it myself.
I think that's very true!

Because a woman working on a car is to men, as a man doing dishes is to women.

I know the general concept of how an internal combustion engine works, I'm the one who puts things together when my mother needs it to be built, I programmed the VCR at the age of 5, and I love video games. I'm a still a girly girl. I don't work on cars because they get you dirty, I didn't become an engineer because it's a boys club, I can tolerate small amounts of programming, and I still love video games.

I am a very independent person, but I like the idea of being taken care of too. I couldn't care less if my boyfriend or husband can build a house, rewire a lamp, fix a car, or whatever. I'm much more concerned about his relationship with Christ and the health of his and my relationship.

And Arwen, Shouryu makes a good point; you're a hottie. Accept the compliment and move on. :p

I know what you mean, Arwen. I get the strangest looks when I'm at a truck stop or something eating my pancakes, then I break out the yarn and crochet hook and make a bunch of granny squares. Some women even give me a wolf whistle.

Because a woman working on a car is to men, as a man doing dishes is to women.

Hmmm idk, doing the dishes isn't a woman's hobby you know.... (Tred lightly, guys). I think what was said about a guy being able to be a man, and dress up nicely, yet not be metrosexual, is as attractive to a woman, as a woman working on a car is to a man.
