I haven't traveled alone (unless you count jury duty), but I do plan on it. My plan is, once I'm out of debt, go to LA for a week, and visit The Price Is Right. I plan on a $2,000 budget.

Bob Harris has some neat travel advice here for those interested:
How to get from Machu Picchu to Kathmandu on a Kiva lender’s budget | Kiva

Although, I don't recommend taking out a bunch of credit cards just to get free miles. Use cash.

I have traveled only a little but I have a Japanese lady friend who has been all over the world. I think her first big trip was leaving Japan and crossing the old USSR on a train, back in the 1970's. She ended up in Denmark where she lived for a year, taking short trips to Europe when she could. After that she flew to San Francisco, learned English and studied a profession. She has been living in California ever since. She is really fearless about traveling, and goes to a new country every year. She is always on the lookout for a good travel companion.

As to advice, learn to pack light. Leave room in your suitcase for goodies you buy on your trip. There are companies who specialize in travel clothing and accessories. Have a backup plan if things don't go the way you were expecting. Use a concealed carry device with extra money and spare credit card. If you're going to another country, travel with a tour group until you feel comfortable going on your own or with a good companion. I like the idea of car travel here in the USA over airline travel. You really see the country better from a car and have flexibility to go where you like and to make your own schedule. There's a lot to see right here. If you travel in the off season, you won't have much trouble finding places to stay on short notice or without a reservation.

Weird how I found this post today. I really have been wondering about doing the same thing.
Just please do remember we live in a fallen world. You need to be vigilant.
Do your research on which areas are safe to visit on your own. Take items with you in case of an emergency. Items such as a medical aid kit, change for a payphone, a list of emergency numbers, map, guide for the area, pepper spray. You'll be able to find more suggestions online. But do pack light.
Research. Research. Research.
When you think you have decided on a place; search on the internet for any issues in the area and what people had to say about visiting there.
Even check out the predicted weather during the time you want to go.

I have been thinking of taking one myself. I think solitude is fantastic for getting to know ones self, self-growth and strengthening your relationship with Christ.

Best of luck!

This past summer I spent two weeks alone in Montreal doing an artist residency. It was so awesome! But I got lonely a lot I found. I found that my best friend quickly became Google Maps <3 Love ya, buddy!

There were some times when I was walking long distances at night, which probably wasn't the safest. Where I live now you need to be careful where you go by yourself. It's almost like whatever safety precautions you have now you gotta amp up times 100, assume nothing and not trust strangers of the opposite sex.

And all that's just inside my own country. Traveling outside... make a friend in another country and travel with them if possible! I wouldn't recommend going it alone. Too many bad things happen to us ladies when we think we're being independent. I know that seems so old school of an attitude, but it exists for a reason! Your safety is more important than your independence.

I venture most places alone. 2016 may be the year I live life on the road, even (alone).

I travel alone often for business. I have pondered doing a tour to a different country alone. My travel agent says there are many tours like that and are safe. I just haven't done so, as I feel guilty not taking the kids. So I usually plan kid friendly vacations within the USA
