Hey Everyone,

Melita's comment about my signature (M.C. Escher) prompted me to make a thread I'd wanted to write as a follow-up to the "Share a Project You've Been Working On" thread.

I've really enjoyed learning about the things you're working on.

Who inspires you in your work, or what are some other works that inspire you?

Melita, in answer to your post in another thread, my favorite MC Escher work is this (though there may be a few I haven't seen yet):

Although his work wasn't well-received at the time he was first producing it, many decades later, he became famous for depictions like this in which his creations seem to transcend the normal laws of physics and gravity in the real world.

This work is called "Relativity", and I love it because on the surface, it looks completely possible. As you study it, your brain turns to mush as you realize that the angles of the staircases are impossible in the real world... but because of the 3-dimenstional quality of the drawing, your brain can't figure out why.

Ironically, it was one of my siblings who discovered MC Escher's works and introduced me to them when I was a teenager.

I once had a t-shirt with this image on it and wore it until it fell apart.

What are some works by other people whom you admire, or just inspiring works in general? Please share them here. I always think about the fact that if someone else hadn't shown me things like this, I would have never known about them, so I hope that you too might discover something here you've never seen before... and love.

It can be anything you want (if you're an engineer, share a work that inspires your own!) and you don't have to be able to name the artist.

This thread is meant to be a sharing and appreciation of the incredible talent that God instills in His own creations, meaning us! :)

Several years ago I was able to go to Las Vegas and discovered this in the lobby of the Bellagio hotel (we didn't stay there; my Mom and I were conducting our own "walking tour" of some of the famous hotels along the strip):

I have always loved things that sparkle in the light. This "glass garden" really fueled my love of the glass arts (which is why I make so many comments about Catherder's amazing stained glass projects.)

The artist is Dale Chihuly, and I've had the privilege of seeing some of his works in two other exhibits. Several years ago, he was in a car accident and lost one of his eyes, but that didn't stop him from creating. Very inspiring!

Here are a few of the other types of works he is known for:

Admittedly, I am a total klutz and would NEVER want huge glass objects hanging around my house. But, it's so much fun to look at and study them (one exhibit had a series of hidden objects my Mom and I scouted out, like a big glass scavenger hunt.)

P.S. In the last MC Escher pic above, you might miss it at first, but there is a skull in the middle of the eyeball. I loved it because it's a reminder of our own mortality, and that someday God will call our bodies back to the dust, but our souls on to heaven. :)

Someone you probably already know, but...

Pavement drawings - 3D Illusions

I'm not sure about copyright so I'm not posting pictures. There's the link to his own site though.

Rembrandt (The Night Watch is my current Windows wallpaper), as well as a lot of Baroque style art and Gainsborough, especially his landscape paintings.

I also enjoy Ayami Kojima's concept art:

Musicians: Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Les Claypool, Steve Howe, David Gilmour, Trevor Rabin, Bach, Mozart, Chopin, John Williams, Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, and a few others.

Writers: Steinbeck, Rand, C.S. Lewis (my most liked at the moment)

Re: Please Share Some Works By Your Favorite Artist, Author, Photographer, Etc. With

I'm a fan of Rodin, and have a sneakily captured photo of The Kiss when the hub and I were in London at the Tate (which frankly for me, was the ONLY reason to go there). I've seen quite a few of his sculptures (where I think he shines) very close at an exhibit in Utah when I lived there.

I used to go to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts monthly - or more once I could drive myself and sit in the presence of Rembrandt and Monet and Van Gogh. Both Van Gogh's and Rembrandt's museums were well frequented by me when I lived in (and visited) Amsterdam.

But this piece by Monti brings me joy to near tears when I see it. I used to share secrets with her. She holds them well.

Re: Please Share Some Works By Your Favorite Artist, Author, Photographer, Etc. With

I studied Art History in university (actually got a major in it... long story!) and came across many artists I like, but my two favourites are Maxfield Parrish and Alphonse Mucha. One of each:

Parrish was one of the first major artists to return to photographic realism after the camera was invented. I have heard it said that the depth of colour in his works can't be reproduced in any photograph, but I have yet to see one in life.

Many of Mucha's paintings capture my concept of outward feminine beauty (I like long hair! :D) and his detail, especially in drapery, inspires my own artistic aspirations.

Oh Mucha!! Some days when I ponder the idea of getting a large and in-color tattoo (I have two) I think about getting a Mucha... but which one! where! Right? :) I also ponder getting Almond Blossoms (Van Gogh)... but how? Because so much of the drama of that painting is in the background. It shimmers. I don't know how that would translate to skin.

I cannot paint or sculpt, but I love watching and participating as one who appreciates other people's work. (My art medium is edible)

I like Chuck Close's work for photorealism as well, though my preference typically turns away from modern/contemporary art.

My closest friend as an adult was REALLY into Dali and Surrealism, which is cool, but for me is far too absurd.

Re: Please Share Some Works By Your Favorite Artist, Author, Photographer, Etc. With

Thanks very much to everyone who has been posting and I hope, will continue to post. Some of these works are so amazing they're truly giving me goosebumps.

Oh my goodness, Olerica, I am definitely going to have to check out Monti. I love sculpture (and paintings) that convey emotion and depth and that veil is Just Amazing.

Several years ago I was able to go to the Vatican and while of course, I wanted to see the Sistine chapel, what I really wanted to see was this:

Michelango's Pieta. I have always loved Michelangelo and until I did some research before the trip, had no idea that by far, he considered himself to be a sculptor and not a painter. In fact, I recently read a book in which he wrote a letter to someone while working on the Sistine Chapel and said, "I'm out of place here. And I'm definitely no painter." As Wisebeardman would say... WOT???

There is a portion of Scripture in which God mentions two craftsmen by name (Bezalel and Oholiab) whom He says are skilled in things such as gem cutting, woodworking, and shaping precious metals, and their talents produced the Ark of the Covenant (Exodus.)

Later on, God tells Solomon He will send Him craftsmen who are filled with His Spirit and the artistic knowledge to design and build the Temple. I was reading an article today that said that Solomon was seeking out the very best in their field, even if they were Gentiles, and one of the craftsmen was named Huram, who had "a Jewish mother and a Gentile father." (2 Chron. 2:7)

I have many friends and family members who come from mixed families. I can only imagine the ridicule this person probably received throughout his life and the names he was probably called (seeing as the people I've known get called "half-breed" and much worse.) But God Himself made this man the very best in his field of expertise, and laid it on a king's heart to specifically send him to work on His holy Temple. I just find this fascinating.

Whenever I see amazing works of art, I'm always thinking, "God, who are we, tiny little insignificant humans... that you would put this kind of knowledge inside people's hearts and allow them to express it???!! What is it about you that makes you share and give this kind of skill to mere human beings? "

While I know not every work glorifies God, I can definitely see God's glory in certain works. And I truly believe that when we apply our artistic abilities (even it it's just appreciation for other works), we are bringing God glory.

As stated above, I have a bit of an obsession with stained glass (that's because my childhood church had stained glass windows I sometimes paid more attention to than the sermon.)

Most people are familiar with these kinds of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany:

But when I went to a museum of his works, I had no idea he was really known for panels such as this:

Astonishing!!! It's a good thing I didn't go to church with windows like that, or I would have NEVER paid any attention.

P.S. Addison, do you know the name of the artist who makes those chandeliers?

It's just a production model Seoulsearch.

I do however have a physicist friend who is attempting to make this himself.

UPS now has a 3D printing service that can be used once he's finished.

I love the Murano glass work from Murano Italy. Particularly the Millefori (Mille=thousand and fori=flowers) style which originally incorporated mosaic beads into the design. The technique now uses glass canes/rods which layer colors of glass in a mold which is pulled on both ends until it reaches the right thickness maintains the design. It is cut into lengths and you can only see the design from the cut ends. It really is fascinating. Murano is definitely on my itinerary when I visit. Glass work is amazing to watch.

These drawings by political activist Pawel Kuczyinski are some of the most provocative, poignant and pertinent things I've ever seen. As the saying goes, "a picture speaks a thousand words":
