So we all know that this forum has it's share of serious moments (rare I know), and fun moments. As I was typing a highly sarcastic reply today I was thinking about what the OP would think and if I would be helping or just being a 'loser' for lack of a better word. I didn't post anything in that particular thread but it got me to thinking.

In our sarcastic, fun loving, joking around nature, do we really help the OP with their question, or are we just making ''fun of'' the OP (It's not making fun of, but I can't come up with a better word/description). Would the post that you make be what you would want to see if you were the OP?

All this thinking and my head now hurts....

What does OP stand for? And I'm not being sarcastic when I ask that (or am I?).

Okay, now I see what you mean - lol.

You have to employ some tact when being sarcastic. For example, I only make direct replies to people who i know won't mind my sarcasm and I will often wait until others have started the ball rolling in the thread. I won't make a generalized sarcastic remark on a thread started by someone I don't know unless there is already sillyness being posted and it is of a good fun nature, not a backhanded, offensive nature.

I typically let it rip and allow the OP to draw their own conclusions. Sometimes my humor is employed to enlighten and entertain. Other times it is made to highlight the utter absurdity of the OP's question.

I'm a huge fan of sarcasm myself, but I try to curb it with folks who don't know me very well.

I have to say that Liamson's fart joke remark of yesterday was one of the best ever in this forum. :) But then he reminded me that Ritter is taken and I cried all afternoon.

Sometimes I feel like in the back of my mind I KNOW how it will play out but I try to change it anyways. I go deeper where I should instead be performing damage control.

Its like that feeling you have when you are dreaming and you know that you are dreaming and you can feel your body waking up but, you cling the dream for just a little bit longer. And as you wake up, you attempt to go back to sleep, back to the dream, but there is no going back. All the excitement that was experienced there, is just a memory.

I love sarcasm but I think being tactful is the best way to go according to the situation. Sometimes people don't get my sarcasm and I end up wondering if people think I'm being a jerk, so it also depends on the person.

There are several points to this, and I'm glad you're thinking about it.

In the name of 'humor' many negative, hurtful, and foolish things are conveyed.

Now, while I highly enjoy dry, witty humor, sarcasm included, I believe the world has enough (as in far too much) negativity, darkness, and hurtful things.

So, while joking to lighten the mood and build others up is good, keep in mind that not everything is all in 'good' fun.

I get not posting sarcastic witty remarks if the OP is someone you don't know, but even when someone else starts it doesn't it just pile on and seem like we are making fun of the OP anyway?

I understand where you are coming from, but is it really necessary to point out that the OP was asking something absurd?

So what, you finally decided to stop being a jerk.

:p
How dare you call me a jerk! *storms off* Oh wait, you said I stopped being a jerk....how sweet. :D

Don't get me wrong, I love sarcasm and humor, but what i am trying to figure out if it is helpful in situations or just making things worse. I'm probably over thinking this just like everything else in my life and should just shut up now before I get myself in more trouble.

Being compassionate and caring how words may be hurtful doesn't seem like a bad thing. You're not in trouble at all. :)

I totally agree with this. And it's a good thing for me to keep in mind, as well.

My over-the-top sarcastic comment about you being a jerk was actually just my way of saying "good point". If you can believe that.

P.S. You've got a coupon now, good for one free insult. :D

OP means original poster (I think). Or were you kidding? You all have confused me now.

I do enjoy your banter :) .

Sarcasm is highly entertaining as long as everyone involved is not taking it seriously; and as long as it isn't being flippant about a serious post.

This chat room has been fun to read :)
