I posted this on my Facebook page, thought I'd share it here as well. :D

Sometimes I take my mom's refrigerator snowman magnets and rearrange them to make a scared, skydiving hat slug.

Got stranded at a truck stop when my oil pump died. (At least, I think that's what it is.) But I'm blessed with an awesome pastor who dropped what he was doing to pick me up and get me back home. ^_^

God is awesome.

I just gotta say, I feel really good right now. Tomorrow, I start helping to lead praise and worship. :) God is so good, and He's given me such opportunities. It's almost humbling, too.

This feels kind of weird to post this after I just posted about how good I feel....but...here goes nothing.

Could you all pray for me tonight? As good as I do or did feel, I'm starting to have a bit of anxiety. My stomach is trying to tie itself up into knots...and the joints in my right hand are hurting again.

Thank you all and God bless. :)

Ugly: If that in any help, I have a bachelor in information systems and still get confused / am unable to solve by the simplest programming problems (hopes employers dont read this....). Right now I am trying to figure out how to calculate a winning move in tic- tac- toe, but have no idea how to get the game to "count" tree similar pieces in a row :p
Wood you, please, explain this reason why you can't count three similar pieces in a row, wwjdK :D

I got a question for Shour....are you hard on your students/have high expectations for them? (Curiosity killed the cat, and one day it might be the death of me, too. :p)

Disney's Little Mermaid is on, so I tuned in. It's disturbing... if I ever have kids, I'm not sure I'll let them in on fairy tales until we can talk about them to a deeper degree.

Shour makes band children tremble in fear. But I think he secretly loves them. ^_^

When they're sixth graders, I'm only tough on them by being stubborn. I'm never outright mean. Once they've proven to me that they're capable of doing something right, the next time we do it, if it's not right, we will do it again, until they do it right. This can range from anything to staying in time with the metronome, to not breathing at a certain point, or even something as basic as coming into the classroom calmly and with purpose. (I will literally wait for them to finish getting ready, then say, "That wasn't acceptable at all. Put your instruments and stands away, grab your backpacks and go back into the hallway to try that again." They haaaaaaaate that.)

With the seventh and eighth graders, I'm similarly stubborn, but I'm tough in other ways. At that point, the band has to know that no one is special, no one is exempt, and everyone is accountable, because one person who doesn't pull their weight hurts us. If you think you're special enough to act however you want just because you're 12, then you're special enough for me to send you packing, because we don't have time for it.

It's a tough balancing act, because there are plenty of really high quality programs out there who's band directors are really REALLY tough on their students, and they get results...but the final result as that the students bail at the end of their eighth grade year because they're tired of being dumped on. I want the kids to understand that hard work and perseverance are rewarded, but that music is joyful and intrinsically rewarding. My students all know that high school band is going to be significantly harder and more demanding, but because of HOW I push them, they stay on and at least give high school band a shot. I want the trophy, for them more than for me...but I want them to keep going more than I want the trophy.

Mine is one of three middle schools that feed the same high school. The high school program got 50 freshmen from the three middle schools last year. The first middle school had a 30-piece 8th-grade band, received a Division II at contest, and 10 of theirs stayed on for high school. The second school had a 50 piece 8th-grade band, got a Division I at contest, and sent 9 of theirs to the high school. We had 52 8th-graders last year, we got a Division II, but 31 of my students stayed on for high school. We may not have gotten that Division I, but in the big picture, I think we had a bigger impact on our students. *shrug*
