Ah, so THAT'S it! A matter of where the average person works! I was confused because here people go out of their way to look darker. And you're telling me there people spend a lot of money to look lighter... ERROR: DOES NOT COMPUTE

Besides... making your skin white? Isn't that what a certain singer did? Look how he turned out. >.>
MJ actually had a legitimate skin condition for which there is no treatment - vitiligo. He didn't try to lighten his skin to look white; his skin condition was causing splotchy patches of "caucasian" on him (it started on his hand, which is why he started wearing the glove). On people with darker skin, you can kind of end up looking mottled like a cow. As the disease destroys skin pigment, he figured the best way to avoid the mottled look was to wipe the rest of the pigment away so that he would at least have an even, consistent skin tone. He wasn't trying to look lighter, just trying to look not-vitiligo-y.

It's interesting to me that in first-world countries, a healthy tan can sometimes signify wealth, because if you've got enough time on your hands to relax out in the sun instead of working indoors all day, you must be well off. Contrast that with third-world countries, where fair skin means you're fortunate enough not to have to labor out in the hot sun all day.
While that's an interesting point, I am not sure that it is valid. This belief has nothing to do with the occupation. This belief that fairer skin tones are superior has sprung up because of cultural and historical factors -

- The first race to live in India were the Dravidians. Then came the Aryans who rode in horses and used iron weapons. They came in from the north and drove the Dravidians south. And unlike the Dravidians, the Aryans were very fair.
- In the Hindu caste system (link - http://www.hinduwebsite.com/hinduism/h_caste.asp), the topmost caste (called "Brahmins), were very fair. Brahmins served as the middlemen between God and men. They were the guardians of temples, and were the most excellent and the most intelligent of all created beings.
- Later in history, India was ruled by the French, the Dutch, the Portuguese and the British who were all fair.
- Finally, all Indian actresses are very fair. If they are dark, they are given villainy roles. It is very hard to find a dark-skinned actress having a meaningful role.

All these factors have created a perception that people who are fair are endowed with some sort of superiority. And that belief seeped into families and into marriages. Today, at the time of marriage, parents ask for "fair brides" for their sons. I can show you numerous advertisements on the classifieds asking for brides that are "tall, thin and fair". Sadly, some people practice it even in my church!

Wow. I am guilty of making fun of MJ because he changed his appearance. But I didn't bother to find out the reason behind it. I apologize for my numerous thoughtless remarks on his change. Thank you for sharing this information. :)

Sure ladies, just go natural. Make up is overrated anyway. :D

Oh, I use public transport every morning looking like her (first pic). Somehow I don't care what others think. :) I won't use make-up just to impress bunch of strangers on the bus -> while I'm going to work, school or something. But I do use a lil bit of make-up when I want to look 'nice'.

Don't change a thing you are beautiful exactly as you are.
heh, I bet you thought I was going a different direction with this huh? Sorry I don't know any secret herb to keep your skin silky smooth or a product to help you lose a lot of weight to have that perfect curve but trust me you don't need it.
Whether your 90 pounds or 190 you are beautiful just as you are. even if the world cannot see it and neither can you you don't see yourself as you really are.

I see women put on loads of make up to make their skin smooth or that perfect color or that lipstick and eye liner and they go through all the trouble to look perfect. I can't help but shake my head because they clearly cannot see what I see, they have no idea how treasured and beautiful the really are by God and if a man cannot see that and cannot see how beautiful they are inside as God's precious child then in my honest opinion that man is not worthy of her. I am not saying don't look good as every women sometimes needs to hear she is pretty but don't go over board. Lots of girls were picked on and made fun of in school because they were seen as ugly or strange or different and I wish I was there because I don't see what others see. many girls have grown up being the outcast and never get dates never even have a guy hit on her no matter how she tried to change her appearance, if only that girl knew just how beautiful she really was.

I have always been able to connect to women easier than guys and by hanging out with them so much in school I learned how a lot of them think and believe, I found that at least 90% of all girls and women never think they are pretty enough or good enough. They see all these models in stuff like Victoria's secret adds or on t.v. these women who are so beautiful and have everything together and their lives are perfect and feel so much less than these women they see. But does anyone even know how much surgery a lot of these models had done to look perfect? How much of themselves they have changed and how much of themselves they have lost? Its mostly all fake and if a girl feels she needs to be fake to feel beautiful or attractive or valued then they obviously have no idea what God sees.
That reminds me of the shock i got when i watched some sermons an apparently very famous woman preacher was giving on youtube. She was so beautiful and perfectly wrinkless you'd have thought you were watching an actress or something rather than a preacher. Then she mentioned her son-in-law that got me alarmed. I googled her and found she was in her late 50's! I had to think i might be judgemental wondering how a representative of God could stand in a packed stadium spreading God's words with a face and everything so obviously plastic surgeried. More disturbing was this woman was recommended by one of my christian penpals and also looking at the mass of women that filled the stadium, it was obvious none of them resented the fact, which made me feel i must be wrong judging from appearance (i still have doubt on this) rather than from content. Am i too old-fashioned? Am i being judgemental?

Toxic chemicals in cosmetics - > another good reason why not to wear (daily) make-up. :)

Ive never tried false eyelashes or hair extensions..however ... . I watched a false fingernail flip into a dinner plate one time and the poor woman it came off of was humiliated ...naturally I started laughing while I about choked trying to hide my laughter in my dinner napkin...she started laughing at my disorder while I was laughing at hers.. I dunno Theres a lot of laughter that comes with such things .. I talked with a woman one time whose false eyelash was part way on and she didnt realize it... her conversation was pretty heavy and her face was so serious... I grabbed her by the shoulders and said "listen youre going to be laughing again in no time , lets go to the bathroom.. she looked in the mirror and laughed so hard she cried... so such things can bring crazy humor at much needed times.. i think loving people no matter what is attached to them is the bigger picture...
