The only thing about telling people to "Just start a new thread, already!!!" is that you have to remember they're new users, and starting threads can be quite intimidating, or they might not even know how.

Case in point, I see a lot of "regulars" here who NEVER, or VERY rarely, start a thread themselves, so demanding people who are brand-spanking new to the site to start their own brand-new thread about a topic that interests them isn't very realistic, and, as Fenner pointed out, not very welcoming at all.
Um, I'm somewhat confused if this was directed to anyone particular so I looked back through to find where someone was 'demanding' a new person make a thread. Nor did I see the passionate "Just start a new thread, already!!!"

As for myself, I would suggest rather than demand. Nor would I say anything sarcastic.

So help me out here in understanding your thoughts please.

If you read through all the replies made when dead thread are started... many of the tones are a lot less than friendly suggestions.

I'm certainly not saying YOUR replies aren't suggestions.

But as Fenner pointed out, many OTHERS are rude and belittling. They're basically saying, "Look at what you did, you idiot!!!" which doesn't make ANYONE feel welcome or a part of the community.

Hope that helps you understand my thoughts! :) If you have any other questions as to what I'm thinking, feel free to ask.

I always say this too, that I understand that people are bothered by it, but the most helpful thing they could do is write a new thread about the topic themselves to get a new discussion going so that the topic could still be discussed.

One of my personal pet peeves is when people are bothered by something... but don't proactively do anything about it in a positive manner. Offering to help someone write a new thread, or writing that thread themselves could be a much more helpful contribution.

Thank you.

My similar thoughts as well.

People always talk about what should happen when dead threads are resurrected.

I think we should also discuss what should happen when people just complain about it and don't start a thread themselves, because I think they should be required to write at least 5 threads and 1 poll themselves in order to see how challenging it actually is (and how critical people can be).

Why, they could even contact the new user who posted in the thread and offer to write a new thread for them or help them write their own thread... which WOULD be VERY welcoming. Imagine that!!!

It's a whole lot better than complaining, criticizing, and doing nothing. If it bothers someone so much, it should move them to a positive action.

threads should be locked after 30 or so days of inactivity.

And seriously, ALL forums have something called SEARCH. ie LURK MOAR.

heh forget it, common sense don't exist anymore. enjoy beating the bones of the dead horse that died 10 years ago..

All right then, Wise... Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It:

Write 5 slap-yourself-silly-they're-so-new-and-never-before-discussed threads and 1 poll within the next month.

I double dog dare you, and I'll even throw in a missing rip (long-running forum gag.)

Warning... should you not choose to accept this challenge... this post will self-destruct!!

I've actually been thinking about this and would like to make it an official challenge.

Anyone out there who is regularly annoyed by zombie threads, here's your chance to make a change in a positive direction!!!

Here are the guidelines of The Challenge:

1. Write 5 threads and 1 poll about topics that have never before been discussed in the Singles forum but are still on-subject with being single within the next month (this would mean the deadline is May 16.)

2. Send me (or include it in your threads) the link for at least 1 post you've made in a resurrected zombie thread in which you stated your dislike of seeing zombie threads resurrected.

3. If you meet these very simple requirements (I mean, they SHOULD be simple, right? Seeing as people seem to think it must be so easy to do) and are willing to give me your address, I will personally send you $20. Due to limited funds :), I must limit this to the first person who accomplishes this.

I'm anxious to see if anyone will try and I will forever be in awe of the person who attempts this!!!!

Remember, your threads and polls have to be COMPLETELY NEW topics that pertain to single life and yet have NEVER been discussed here before and do not show up when we run a forum search on your threads.

Ready, set, go!!!

(Hmm... maybe I should just write a completely separate thread about this... And if I'M the one to meet my OWN challenge... Does that mean someone will send ME $20???) :D

I could be guilty on other board of doing that, but I agree, the Archive is the final resting place of threads that became uninteresting, what the OP is saying is - Please don't resurrect them. RIP
I don't believe that was the intent of the OP. It is about being courteous, kind and extending a warm welcome. There are times that a new member is immediately torn to shreds due to a supposed breach of forum etiquette.

Viola is right though... I've already disqualified myself by my own rules!

Thank you very much for the offer, Tourist.

And to be completely honest... Oncefallen pointed out that I've written 398 threads during my time on CC... and even I'M not sure I could come up with 6 (5 and a poll) completely novel ones... though if I wrote out this challenge in the form of a thread and poll, I'm sure that would be Numbers 1 and 2. :)

Or you can just make a post where you complain about a zombie thread. There was nothing in those official rules saying it had to be a previous post complaining about a zombie thread.

Unfortunately, it won't be very much fun for me if I'm the only one to try to meet my own challenge... and kind of defeats the entire point! :)

But you are already in awe of me, so why would I attempt this?

Besides, I'd only use that twenty to buy you a cheeseburger. ;)

The funny thing is... I was thinking to myself... "If anyone would try this, it would be Catherder, hands down..." except that I've never seen you complain about a zombie thread either. :D

Actually, I was thinking of your DARE thread when I wrote this (that thread was one of the best... and most original... I've ever seen in my time here.)

Woo hoo!!! For $20, we might even be able to get TWO cheeseburgers.

That doesn't mean I'd share or anything.

Just sayin'. :p
