Roh_Chris: Nope, not weird. Sorry to disappoint you. It all fits under "I have found what works for me and I don't really care what the world thinks about it."

waterlily: Most of what you described sounds like mild OCD. But as long as it doesn't impede normal life, no cause for concern. Certainly not as weird as this one guy who was in the store checkout lane and paid for his order with dollar bills which were all in their own separate little plastic bags.

Naaa... I'm fine. No OCD .. But thanks for the diagnosis doc ... How much do I owe you? :)

no...it's the number when you turn the volume up or down hahaa... :/
Ah, I see. That doesn't make any more sense, but at least it's not as inconvenient. One volume click more won't make any real difference.

I think Nigel explains this best...

Sometimes when I'm just vegging and watching TV, I'll pull my shirt up over my nose. Or I'll put my finger on my nose. Must be some sort of comfort/safety blanket...thing.

This is an interesting thread... especially for a profiler like myself.

Most of the "weird" things y'all mentioned aren't actually weird. It's just part of the human spectrum. The vast majority of what was mentioned is anxiety based.

If any of you would like to know why or how they're anxiety based, ask. I'll be happy to explain.

Hi Aimee, yes, I would actually very much like to know what you mean about anxiety-based characteristics and why people would see them as odd quirks.

I've also always wanted to ask, what is the official definition of profiling (when not used in the sense of say, looking for a serial killer). I was never sure how profiling fits into everyday civilian life. The program I attended in college was completely behaviorally based and never mentioned any of these things, so I always love it when you expand upon your knowledge.

Since it's a discussion of the things people have shared already in the thread, I would think it would be something very much on-topic. Thanks for your consideration and for sharing with us!

Yes most of the things listed are just personal preferences. But for some reason people around you seem to think what you do is sufficiently out of the ordinary to merit comment. That's what this thread is about, things you do that for some reason other people seem to think are weird. So all the things listed are right on topic. :)

On the topic of being weird, or at least abnormal... christians are somewhat abnormal. But normal is defined by the majority, and is not always what is best.

Consider a line of four soda machines, three of which are out of order. In this setting, out of order would be "normal." But it wouldn't be right, especially on a hot day like today when I am tired, thirsty, sweaty and I WANT A NICE COLD SODA!

Sometimes we are seen as a bit weird because with God's peace we can be calm in a storm, and with God's joy we can smile in hard times. But considering all the grumps I know, I'd much rather be weird than fit the current standard of what is "normal." :D

I don't mind dispensing of small talk.

I act or look uncomfortable when I don't mean to be.

Okay, so here's the deal. Like I mentioned before, the vast majority of the things mentioned are simply anxiety based. I'll list the one's I was thinking of.

  • Apologizing for things not your fault
  • Being self-conscious
  • When containers are almost empty
  • Not wanting to go to bed dirty
  • Doing things alone, but unwilling to do them in public
  • Overplanning, replanning to excess
  • Relocking or rechecking things over and over
  • Odd numbers bothering you
  • Needing to keep things separate
  • Seeking perfection

With the exception of being self-conscious, these actions are performed because they reduce anxiety. They are in no way weird until they reach a point of abnormality. To reach said point they must interfere with daily life to such a degree that you are not able to function. With that being said, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) was mentioned. OCD is primarily an anxiety based disorder with very clear parameters. If any of you feel that OCD is a possibility for you, I recommend seeing your general physician or a therapist. There are many medications which can help you as well as therapeutic tools which can be of great assistance.

A profiler (which isn't what Quantico calls them any more) is someone who has been trained in psychology and sociology (and a few other things depending on the person's background). They use their training to study someone and give a run down on who they are. Much like a profile on someone's face, a psychological profile is a moderate glimpse into someone's psyche. They're used to predict actions, crimes, likelihood of _______, but most often they're used to find criminals. Big time criminals. As far as I know, all branches of the military, the CIA, police forces, and most famously the FBI use profilers to catch the bad guys.

That is true. I think the purpose of this thread was for people to share what the others around them called as "abnormal". It may or may not be weird in the literal sense. And most often, what we call as "abnormal" behaviour is triggered by underlying reasons like what DuchessAimee pointed out.
