There is "dumb" or "ignorant", "uneducated", "empty", etc. Those people are doomed to suffer the consequences of their ignorance.

But people who are mentally ill by no fault of their own, they are completely different. I wonder if I could ever date someone like that. I don't know. Maybe. But those people are innocent victims, and deserve love.

Jesus loves everybody, even the ignorant and empty people like say Paris Hilton or something. The real challenge is for us to love them too. I find it hard.....

I have no problem loving mentally handicapped people. But it will be a cold day in hell before I love people like Paris Hilton. LOL.

Speaking from one who would be considered slow or dumb.

Processing information takes me longer than it does others. There really isn't much i can do about that. I've been this way since i was a child.
Just Replying to these kind of threads takes me over an hour, its taken me 30 minutes just to come up with this so far.
Words don't come easily for me, and that is so frustrating. I sit in sunday school class every sunday and the teacher asks us questions about the lesson and i can never say anything, because i dont think of what to say until AFTER sunday school is over and i've had time to think through what he was asking and teaching about. However the other people in the class are coming up with these great answers, and i always think to myself... how do they do that. How do they hear it, process whats being asked, then just come out with some great answer so quickly.
I have never, and will never be able to do that. It seems so unfair at times.

People that have the same problem i do, we struggle with really not liking ourselves over this. It's so frustrating not being able to be like everybody else. Forgetting what someone said, when they just it five minutes ago. Not being able to come up with an answer to a question you've been asked because you haven't been able to work out in your head what's being asked, not being able to understand what should be simple directions or instructions.
I think people forget that we know were slow, we know it every day. We don't need any reminders.

It's very depressing to think because my mind doesn't work as fast as say your's, that someone wouldn't date me over it and that i may be doomed to be single.
You do know that you're not the only one, right?

As for myself, although I would prefer a woman who can stimulate my intellect, it would fall into the category of a want, not an absolute need in a relationship. I would by far prefer someone with common sense over an intellectual genius that has none.

As others have mentioned, intelligence is multi faceted and the measure of someone's intelligence is somewhat subjective. Just because someone can spew out data that they read doesn't necessarily mean they are overly intelligent, just educated. Likewise just because someone takes a little more time to be able to formulate a thought doesn't mean they aren't intelligent. Some people are deep thinkers that may take a little time to process information, but once they have are actually capable of doing something with that information other that just repeating verbatim what someone else has said.

In my opinion, education is filling your brain with information, intelligence is being able to process and use that information in a practical way. There are tons of people out there that are highly educated that aren't too bright and likewise a lot of "uneducated" people that have high levels of intelligence and use it well.

NOD: Taking time to think carefully about what you say seems incredibly wise to me. There is nothing dumb about you, my friend :)

ONCEFALLEN: My stepdad used to say (in his slow Texas drawl) that there are a whole lotta folks out there who are educated beyond their capacity for comprehension. :) Common sense isn't as common as one might think, is it? :)

Apparently my OP was taken as insulting. The intention of this thread had very little to do with who I think is dumb or not, or anything at all to do with how one identifies a dumb person. It had absolutely nothing to do with mentally handicapped people. I apologize if I offended anyone. My questions were real; Rephrased the original questions below.

Given the trade off between looks and intelligence, the world seems to often pick looks. Christians seem to pick intelligence or depth of personality.

So what does this mean for those people who truly are not deep (is that phrased better than dumb?). Christians seem to seek depth in a partner, but what about people who truly don't have that depth? Can a christian actually lack that depth? If so, are such people just doomed to be single?

To be honest, I have met more dumb ppl married than intelligent/fast ppl married. I think that the more intelligence seem to have a person, the more they think about advantages or disadvantages or marriage, dumb ppl meet someone and just marry.

I think "depth" is different things, to different people. I also think that everyone is deep, just not always in the same ways. And I know that sounds like a cop-out answer, but it's true.

Like the way Thoreau wrote about the ice on Walden Pond. Some people would consider that to be shallow, since he wasn't thinking about the plight of the planet, and the meaning of life. Whereas, some people might think that it shows an extreme depth, that he was not only able, but willing, to examine something so ordinary, and actually see beyond what most people would see, and notice things that many people would not notice.

I'm thinking of two people right now. Both of them had extreme depth. One of them would be seen as "deep" by most people, and one of them would not. I loved them both, but guess which one I got along with? ;)

Chris·tian (krschn)
adj.
1. Professing belief in Jesus as Christ or following the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
2. Relating to or derived from Jesus or Jesus's teachings.
3. Manifesting the qualities or spirit of Jesus; Christlike.
4. Relating to or characteristic of Christianity or its adherents.
5. Showing a loving concern for others; humane.
n.
1. One who professes belief in Jesus as Christ or follows the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus.
2. One who lives according to the teachings of Jesus

A true Christian has depth and he/she doesn't care if the world thinks of him/her less.
There's just NOTHING shallow about following Christ.
Again, I don't know about being doomed to be single :)D)
but a true Christian has the heart to submit to His will. :)

There should be a new saying: "You're too deep to get married."

I said almost everyone treats me like I'm dumb and some have said I might be retarded (these were serious suggestions from people I cared about, they were not trying to be funny). Retarded people are NOT dumb despite what most people think. They look that way on the outside but many of them are actually very gifted and some are actually geniuses. Did you see the movie Rain Man? That movie is based on a real person.

And why is it, that those who are super smart, like mensa smart, are the ones without any common sense at all.

I tried editing, but apparently went over the timer.

Ok, I know there are some really smart people with common sense, but sometimes it makes you wonder.

And as for the air head, I played one for the longest time in school, because that was the role I was given. Yeah, I have brains, but, I didn't let that show much back then. I think the only ones who really saw it were my science teachers, and sometimes social study teachers.

And Nods, I understand how you feel. It's like that with reading for me. When I was younger, my siblings use to make fun of me for taking an hour just to read the funny pages, when it took them all of five minutes. Of course, they tend to forget they were like 5-10 years older then me. But still, that didn't help.

Rain man was smart. But he was not retarded. Autistic maybe.

Autism is different.

I have a brother, technically the only full blood sibling I have and he is by any measure very severely mentally handicapped. Last time I talked to him, he punched me in the face.

He does not have downs, Downs is different. To a degree can be classified as a form of intellectual disability but due to genetics, I do not call a person with down's retarded.

People with CP have cognitive abilities just like any of us, also not retarded.

Zero, I have never thought in my wildest dreams that you were anything other than bright, smart and not lacking in any mental faculty. I have seen no evidence to the contrary.

The only person here who raises any flags for me is Green but I think that is just because my own mind cannot follow what he is trying to say.
