Internet Relay Chat, one of the oldest chat systems. The CC chatroom is modeled on an IRC platform with many of the same conventions, like alerting you when somebody says something to you directly and hitting tab to autocomplete a nick, though I don't know that it uses the same code in the background.

IRC is still used by many people. Right now I'm having a conversation in an IRC room with four or five people.

I did not see 'flatulent communications' in the list.
Did I miss it? Perhaps that belongs in the 'smoke signals' category(?)

I remember an Anne McCaffery book (The Ship Who Won) that mentioned a species on one planet that communicated that way. They would eat a certain kind of berries and then get together and have a group conversation. The berries caused the repeating repeats.

If there are important details, I prefer texting. When it is urgent, I prefer calling. When it is not urgent, I don't like taking calls. Wanting to borrow money from me except in emergency cases is not considered urgent. Overall, communication is not one of my strengths so I am often misunderstood.

I like to communicate under water by making whistling and clicking sounds, sound travels faster and further in water.

Texting I was hesitant and fought it, but it's great for a quick hello or update.

I don't do facebook, it's how the CIA keeps tabs on you. ;)

I think conversation is the best because there are many different non-voice cues that may be missed and therefore miss expressed. I took a interpersonal Communications class.

Misunderstanding happens because we fail in the listening part which is the most important. Everybody wants to be heard but don't know how to listen.

It depends on the person.
However, in the context of communicating between two singles,
I would prefer in person, face to face, while making eye contacts (important for me), and be able to see her move.
Hand-written letters are good too.

* What are your favorite ways to communicate with others?
- Face-to-face. I don't believe that you can fully present yourself through texting. You're not reading body language or facial expressions. With communication, you're only using 10% of words and the rest are unspoken cues done by body language and facial expressions.

* What are some communication styles you were reluctant to try, but wound up liking?
- Video chatting with CC people or just in general. Although I already have an active social life, I have met at least a few people on here I consider close friends. Sometimes, life is crazy like that. My typical way of meeting people is just going out and meeting people.

* What are some styles of communication that you prefer NOT to use at all?
- I would not like to text confrontations. I believe those are done best face-to-face. When texting confrontation, it's a cowardly way to act. Yes, obviously on here, sometimes the only way you can do is through texting. However, if there is an option to meet up or even video chat, I would prefer to do that. You can communicate best your frustrations seeing each other and being kind to each other.

I have noticed for the last 25 years a person is increasingly expected to be connected. It's like a civic duty to be reachable. If you don't have a mobile communication device you are seen as a luddite or a hermit. If you do have a mobile phone and (heaven forbid!) you leave it at home when you go somewhere, you are seen as remiss in your duties to your fellow man who might want to call you in that time. "What's the point of having a phone if you never have it with you?"

Excuse me, I pay that phone bill and it's there for MY convenience. If my convenience with my phone and your convenience with your phone coincide at the same time I'll answer the phone. If I happen to be busy doing something I'll call you back if it's important or if I just want to talk to you.

Yes this is a sore spot for me. Sometimes I WANT to be out of reach. Man, the flak I get for it!

I'm definitely not going to show this post to my kids. They better be reachable whenever momma needs to contact them lol.

If it is someone here or anywhere where else online you really don't have much of a choice PM, or if one is lucky enough over time on a messenger or Skype, etc. There are a lot of lonely people on this site who is: socially awkward, social anxiety, or they are very shy, introverted people here on this site, and for what ever reason don't have any family or friends in real life. I really feel sorry for them, and any new person who comes here looking for friends.

I've really been enjoying reading the replies to this thread, and hope people will continue to post answers.

I was especially surprised to see that there are many people here who still love good old-fashioned pen-and-paper letters, and am utterly SHOCKED to find out that Yahweh is one of them!! :D

I was one of the last people at work to get a cell phone, and even then, it took me another 3 years to get another phone that texts (but it still has REAL buttons.) Now I'm dreading the day when I have to update to a phone that has a touch screen, because I absolutely loathe them. A friend of mine wanted me to type a sentence on her phone last week and it took me almost 10 minutes. GRRR...

Reborn can type twice as fast on a screen the size of a credit card as I can with a laptop, and he teases me about the day I'll be forced to "upgrade" to a more modern device.

To tell you the truth, I am thoroughly dreading it.

I told him the day I'm forced to get a smart phone, I'm gonna hook it up to a genuine 1980's Commodore 64 keyboard, because if I'm forced to type on a stupid screen, nearly all my written communication is going to come to a screeching halt.

(For all those people cheering at the thought of me not writing threads anymore, don't throw that party yet! :p If I'm going to upgrade, I might as well go all the way and get voice-to-text as well. Don't say you haven't been warned.)

Oh that part is easy Kim. Bluetooth keyboard. Even my ultra-tiny phone has a bluetooth connection. If all my laptops burned up and all I had left was my little bitty phone, I could still type long forum messages.

Someday when I upgrade (you'll know because hell is freezing over and penguins are falling out of the sky), I'm probably going to be asking you step-by-step about what I should be looking for.
