I just got done reading 3 books-

I Howl I Growl
Dr. Seuss's ABC's
Sleepy Time

It's so hard to read when your kid is shutting the book on your fingers.

I reckon you're one of them sped redders.

I've never read any Jane Austen books and I've never really had a desire to, either...
The perfect woman?

I tried reading Pride and Prejudice several years agoin university,to see what the fuss was all about. Honestly, it seems most females adore her books. It's good to know not everyone does. I made it 60 pages in, before I tossed the book into the 'So Boring, Kill Me Now' pile and picked up a good book instead. I had no patience for the writing style (too formal and flowery) and absolutely no patience for people who beat around the bush (avoid what they really want to say) and P & P seemed to be full of that nonsense.

So I'm halfway through Lord of the Rings... and I'd forgotten just how much these little guys love to sing. I mean, they have eating songs, walking songs, bedtime songs and songs for taking baths! They are marching through the woods with bad guys after them... singing danger songs!

Dunno.

Maybe the Ring Wraiths would be happier if they sang a little more.

Huh, kind of like the Wizard of Oz munchkins. "Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead."
Snow White's Seven Dwarfs. "Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go."

Hmmm, maybe the smaller the humanoid, the more singing it produces? Interesting concept! :p

I love the story and I love the characters but the endless descriptions do get to me. Also, the constant songs/poems are a bit hit and miss. I'm with you there!

As with Last of the Mohicans, I skim over parts that don't interest me. But the character relationships are amazing.

I could never understand why he insisted on carrying all those pots and pans through the swamp, up a mountain and never using any of them.

I don't really understand why Gandalf didn't just get the Eagles to fly Frodo straight to Mt. Doom...

A couple of thoughts on this.

I thought the same thing, but someone who has read the books (I haven't) said something about the Eagle's alliance early on wasn't with them. Or that they wanted to remain unbiased, so at first they didn't help. Not really sure on that, I just remember there being some sort of explanation.

My other thought is more spiritual in nature. I make weird connections like this, so bear with me. ;) Sometimes we need the journey, we need the hardships along with the laughter, to really grow as a person. Sometimes when you get to a point in the journey, you may think "Why didn't God just have me be here in the first place?" For example, I live in Illinois now. Sometimes I wonder why I had to go through the whole ordeal in South Dakota that I did in order to get here, instead of just move here right after graduation. But, part of that journey helped me learn and grow in ways I otherwise wouldn't have.

That's probably way deeper than what the Eagles/Mount Doom journey are supposed to be.

Rachel, it's been quite awhile since I've read The Lord of the Rings, but I remember the Great Eagles being almost sacred and keeping to themselves. They couldn't be called upon like a taxi-cab, as they weren't used for transport. The situation was highly irregular. It was out of mercy that they helped the Fellowship.

Also, I reckon your spiritual understanding isn't too off the mark. :)

As far as character growth in the story (or anywhere for that matter), I quite agree. It's the journey that refines us. My thought on the Eagles was tongue-in-cheek as far as the storyline, as that wouldn't have been much of a trilogy.
