yesterday, i was thinking of all the things that inspire me, what motivates me to grow, and provides the cautionary tales of what i am afraid of.

i'll share my list in a bit, but i want to hear from you.

what are the things and experiences, and who are the people who inspire you to grow, change, and to become the person you want to become one day?


what about the "cautionary tales" that motivate you, perhaps out of fear?

who and what have provided significant inspiration to you in the past?

Hi Monica!

These are just a few things that came to mind (I'm going through a dry spell right now when it comes to motivation but have plenty of cautionary tales):

* My Grandpa went serious rounds with lung cancer before he died, even though he had quit smoking 10 years earlier. And when it came to drugs, a friend of mine told me what it was like (being on a certain substance) and my first thought was, "Wow. I can't ever try something like that... because I would like that feeling way too much (and couldn't stay away from it." These were the major reasons why I never even tried smoking or drugs. I was afraid of winding up addicted, sick, and dying.

* Same thing with alcohol. I went to one party in high school and there was an older guy whose eyes were so bloodshot you couldn't see any of the whites--and he was the one who went out to buy more booze. I kept thinking about how many people he could have killed on the way, and that's it, I was done. I didn't want to have anything to do with irresponsible intoxication again. I never went to another party, though I did go to clubs later in college (but I can count the number of times on one hand), and people always wanted me to be the designated driver. In my late 20's I dated an alcoholic, thinking I could help.

Let's just say I learned my lesson!!! Never. Try. To. Save. An. Addict. Yourself.

* One of my biggest inspirations is my friend J. He grew up in bad situations and was taken in by the wrong people. But I've never seen someone work so hard to change his life around, and his life helps me keep my own in perspective. J works 40+ hours a week for $10 a month (yup, a month), which really makes me stop and think when I have complaints about my job or life.

You see, J is incarcerated... but he's always had jobs in prison, and he was ecstatic about making it to the $10 level because that was actually a raise. How many people in the United States would work their hearts out for ten bucks a month? He doesn't have to hold to jobs he has--he seeks them out and has to apply and win a position just like we freebies do out here.

The things he's grateful for and the dedication he shows for what he's given... really kicks my butt when I'm in all-out grumbling mode, and I'm thankful to have his earnest efforts as my reminder.

I find inspiration in a strangers smile. In the eyes of a man who is looking at the woman he loves. In the laughter of a baby. In the hope of someone who is hoping against all odds. I find inspiration in the people I meet, even people on cc. I find inspiration in all the stories I see being unraveled at the airport, lovers meeting, lovers saying goodbye. Happy tears, sad tears. Heart breaks and love stories too. I find inspiration in the sunset and the sunrise. From the smell of a rose. From the sight of a toddler taking it's first steps. In old books, in works by great authors, in old houses, small houses, mansions, flowers, dew and even in solace. I find inspiration in LIFE.

By society's standards, I have been very good, and I have been very bad. I remember times when I was judgmental, or intolerant. I remember being inspired by more mature male mentors who accepted me, and demonstrated that they believed in me. They showed me that they truly believed that I was a better person, and really knew that I was a better man than I had behaved. So strongly, they took risks for me.


I have learned, and I firmly believe: If you are a leader of others, your first responsibility is to care. About what? ----everything. ---everyone.


The person is always more valuable than the circumstance.


Love is powerful.


Never place great emotional investment in talk about future action on the part of someone you want to believe in. If I invest my emotion in someone, it is their actions that I value. When it comes to my emotions: show me AND tell me.

If you think someone's amazing: TELL THEM. If you love someone: TELL THEM. It doesn't matter if they already know. What matters is that you told them. If you value someone: TELL THEM. I strive to understand and appreciate the spiritual value of our words.



I see people every day who mitigate, assist, and intervene in the actions of the unreasonable, and troubled people of society. I am sorely disappointed when someone treats another human being as if they are a better person, or above them, simply because the person they are interacting with is being rude and unreasonable.


When people show anger, especially to strangers, and behave unreasonably: there is always always always pain involved. We bury our pain deep inside of us because we believe we need to be something that society has defined us to be. We medicate that pain in many ways: drugs, alcohol, sexual immorality, theft, violence, angry words. These are all things that create the illusion of control. When people display these behaviors, they are crying out to show themselves that they have power over their pain. They fail to understand that the only power over their pain is Jesus Christ. When they give their pain to Him, they are free from it. When the pain is gone, there is no longer a need to medicate it; and we overcome. Teach others to stop living for the world, and to start living for God. Teach them to live for all that He has CREATED us to be. Learn to do that by action and attitude, ---not simply words alone. The light of the world lives in us.


I am inspired by people who understand and genuinely care for people. People who have unique insight into the hearts and minds of others, not because they have some talent or gift; but because they have bothered to care enough to develop a skill set via experience. I am inspired by people who know how to use the spiritual muscle that is our hearts.


People who, despite their own struggles, mange to be an encourager for others.


People who walk the talk.


We live in a polluted society that values greed and social status. I live and work in an environment that is the benchmark for greed. You can't fake spiritual weightlifting. When someone does it in the darkest of settings, the light of Christ shines brighter than ever.


The greatest blessing we can ever hope to receive is the opportunity to be a blessing to others.

thanks so much for sharing this, kim. by the way, i love how openly you share of yourself. it's inspiring to me!

i am moved by your examples, especially your incarcerated friend. one thing i discovered along my path is the fact that we are all so much more alike that we'd like to believe.

i can't begin to imagine how different my life would be had i been born into a family with drug & alcohol addicted, for example. one of the things i learned while volunteering at a juvenile detention facility is that there are so many incarcerated who are living sober for the first time since they were exposed to drugs. it's so hard to see people who seem as though they started so far behind zero that they didn't get a "fair" chance.

I take out mails at work around 4 pretty much every day, then I sit outside to kinda catch my breath while watching heavy traffic; and I'm usually spaced-out for about a minute or two. Sometimes, well, once in a blue moon, that is, while I'm sitting down and feeling the nice cool breeze, an old man in his late 80's, probably about 5'2", severely hunched back, a paper-wrapped package on his side and he's holding onto it tightly with his whole arm, while looking down and "walking" in a pace that is faster than normal walking pace but slower than jogging - or may be it seems that way because he has to walk fast so he wouldn't fall down forward due to his upper body leaning forward, or it could be his many small steps that makes him look like he is almost jogging - somehow inspires me in a scene where the whole traffic is stopped bumper to bumper as this old man disappears out of my sight in like 15 seconds. Then once he's gone, I get up, dust off my bottom and go back into the building with a determined look on my face.

C.S. Lewis inspires me on a spiritual level. I've read almost ALL of his books.

Joyful people who are living with disabilities and we get to see them every where in our lives, touches my heart SO deeply and teaches me big lessons to delight myself in the Lord no matter how hard life is....

Kate Middleton inspires me with her strong personality, self confidence, n' not because she's married to a prince. She must have been like that first, and THAT'S why a real princes fall in love with her. She's simple, n' graceful and has this glamour and attractive face. I love how elegant she is too!!

On a very general level I am inspired by people who do the right thing even when it costs them personally. To me sacrifice is just very inspirational. I'm also inspired by the people I know who have somehow maintained soft and compassionate hearts in spite of difficult lives and circumstances that encourage them to just give up.

Much of my inspiration comes through books and movies LOTR, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Mission, End of the Spear, Luther, and Ivanhoe (the like 4.5 hour A&E version from the 90's) are near the top of the list but I'm sure there are more that I just can't think of at this point in time.

in no particular order...

+ the when an esoteric (or complex) yet insightful concept is painted artfully by a beautiful illustration of words

+ painfully honest truth, stripped of artifice and hidden motivation

+ music - on so many levels. the soaring notes, the wail of emotion, the relentless rhythm's drive, the finesse of an airy, rounded syllable whispered into the quiet

+ the depth and unconditional love of God's love for me as a person, and not just as a member of the human population

+ the wise words of an elderly woman or man sharing from their life's lessons

+ people who show love, grace and forgiveness to those who've deeply hurt them

+ the rugged beauty of lush forest, thick with interwoven and dependent life, all beautifully created by God

+ people who've started out in life behind "zero" and have to work much harder to just get to where many of us take for granted, yet do so without bitterness.

+ one of my favorite things to do at the airport is watch people who are reunited returning from trips. it's so heartwarming when you see those folks whose joy leaps with excitement.

+ the yielding of one's life through obedience to Christ, motivated by love, not a set of rules

+ unselfish kindness - not motivated by expectation, but rather sheer generosity.

+ gratitude and joy for life and its many blessings.

Testimonies definitely inspire me. Living, proclaiming testimonies of what God has done in peoples' lives.

One a spiritual level the Bible, The Pope, Mary, and Jesus inspire me. On another level Music has always been an inspiration for me.

My biggest 'inspiration' is the constant and never ending knowledge that who i am is not good enough, or not good at all, and i need to change. This includes most areas of my life and person, if not all.

I guess you could say that I am inspired by individuals that take their time to be an inspiration to others. People that use their talents to glorify God, and live their life loving people despite the sin that they harbor in their lives and live their lives for the common good. I am also inspired by severely broken people that depend on God too, mostly because it helps me feel human again and realize that I don't have to have it all together for God to love me. I am also inspired by people who are able to be honest about the pain that they feel and see a bigger picture. Adding color to the sunset sky just as Jesus did :)

Music is inspiring.

Esther, Corrie Ten Boom and Irena Sendler are inspirational.

Also, my parents inspire me. In their late 40's they trudged through a year of paperwork, raised funds, and went half-way across the world to adopt 3 small children, who all have special needs. They displayed dependence on God and the willingness to follow wherever He is leading.
