When I was a kid, this was quite a darling question to adults. My answers I believe varied. From a doctor to a hotel owner.

What if you were a grownup-kid right now, and the question is posed to you.
*imagine slow, clearly pronouncing voice * (you know that voice you use on kids sometimes)

What do want to be when you grow up?

Hint: the answer begins with:-

When I grow up...

Or when you grow old... you will definitely grow old no matter how much you fight growing up. :p

True, but there may be other people or circumstances that could prevent you from growing up in the first place, just saying...

When I grow up, I want to be a Time Lord.

Which is actually a roundabout way of saying, "I have no idea what I want to be, so I'll just be someone who can try something and then GO BACK IN TIME AND DO SOMETHING ELSE! MEEHAHAWMWABAHAHAHAHAAAAAHAHEE!"

I never had an answer for this question, even when I was kid.

When I grow up I want to open a home for kids and teens to get them off of the streets. To provide them a nurturing environment. The main focus will be to reconcile them to their families if possible. If not possible, then to provide them with the tools necessary to succeed in life on their own. I go off to college to begin to fulfill this in January, so pray for me.

When I was a little girl I wanted to be a doctor. In fact, when I was 5 I looked at my pediatrician and said, "When I'm a doctor, I won't keep my patients waiting." Both he and my mother laughed at me, which actually hurt and angered me. But for me, it's always been medicine.

My mom has told me that when I was little I wanted to be a doctor and drive a backhoe in my spare time. :D
