I know many christian denominations (if not all) require that the people being married are both of that church's denomination. So, what would you do if you met that perfect man or woman but could only marry them if you left your own denomination for theirs? Would you be willing to leave your church and make the switch?

I wouldnt be willing to change it unless it has similar beliefs, for example, i think that pentecostal, baptist and methodist are similar

Nothing to leave, for me... I claim no denomination. Denominations in general just seem odd... not the denominations themselves, but the fact that they exist. I realize people are going to have different ideas, goals, and interpretations of scripture, but Jesus is what matters, He should be our focus, our love for Him should unite us. There exists no gap that He cannot bridge. :)

I think you left out one option on the poll....
[] Denominations Are Man-Made Garbage
^that gets my vote :)
Any Church that would require those stipulations wouldn't be worth going to in my opinion. :)

I chose "huh?"... The only denominations I know of that required that were state religions of certain european nations. A few splinters of those denominations still hold to the tradition, but 95(maybe?)% of christian denominations I know of don't still have such requirements.

By the comments posted in this thread I think that some things are commonly misunderstood.

I think that according to bible we dont belong to one person or another or to one church or another, but we belong to Jesus, who is the only way to God.

But, a denomination is not only a name, its a group of beliefs, so i wonder if some people are really willing to change denominations, for example,

- Would a pentecostal would change denomination to be a catholic ?

- Would a baptist would change denomination to be an adventist or a Jehova witness?

- Would a mormon would change denomination to be a pentecostal?

- Would you be willing to worship idols if you are used to not?

Catholics, Jehovahs Witnesses and Mormons are not denominations. They are separate religions. Thats like asking if you would stop being Christian to marry someone.

And i have no denomination. But i would likely not marry someone whose basic doctrines didn't line up with mine anyways. So it won't matter, because we'll be on the same page as it is.

no! never those who dont serve Christ and are under two different religions btw Christianity is not a religion, "its a way of life"
ex. muslimsxChristians=unequaled yokes=arguements=fights later on about whats true and false.
as with any other religion. God is not a God of chaos but of peace.

i was taught this and i strongly believe this. i had a friend who had a crush on me but believes in God when he wants too. he also accepted his faite to hell instead of heaven.

denominations...for me if you find someone who believes in ur beliefs then your fine and that means youve found truth. im Apostolic Pentecostle and i am to marry only one who is apart of that because if he believes what our beliefs are then we are equally yoked and compatible on what we believe in. not all believe in the samething. both my parents are apostolic pentecostal and both are born again Christians in Christ. and not once have they disagreed on anything because they share the same beliefs.

but this question that u ask is actually based on the persons decision and beliefs. :)

Catholics believe Jesus is the son of God and is one with God. We only worship GOD and Christ Jesus. And I can tell you right now that everyone who thinks we are idolaters has not done any of their homework on the catholic faith.

Mormons and Jehovah's witnesses do not believe that Jesus and God are one, so yes these two are different religions.

Meh its never been an issue for myself and my husband, between the two of us we've been members of Mennonite Brethren, Pentecostal, Baptist, Apostolic, Anglican, Evangelical, Calvinist churches. No one has ever booed us over those church experiences (which were all wonderful in their own way).

The only thing peopled asked us was if the other seriously and openly loved the Lord. Thats all that counts really. Denominations who want to ban people from marrying others from different denominations are just being legalistic which probably happened over time as a result of making sure couples agreed with one another doctrinally (which is VERY important) and they found it would be easier to just encourage marriage within the church.

But if you can't agree on doctrinal stuff (Jesus as God, his ministry death and resurrection; Bible as highest authority; Church leadership models; grace vs works; predestination vs others; gender roles etc), then that makes you as a couple unequally yoked on important issues, and therefore it would be totally within their right of Elders to recommend you not marrying.

I suppose I would be willing to attend and become a member of a church but, my beliefs and my Christianity is my own. They way I exercise my faith would not change because of what church I attend.

Currently I am involved with many churches but, that would not change because I was married. I have no allegiance to a denomination, only to people who serve the Lord.

With all of that said, I would not attend a church where I do not see real fruit or the authority to hold its members accountable for their sins. If Righteousness, Love, Community, Prayer and Charity are not a part of what they do, then I will have no part of with them.

I do not see the point of Venerating the Dead, Slain in the Spirit "Revivals",Preaching Involuntary Salvation, Tourist "Missions" Trips or Fear Mongering End-Times Prophecies.

I join the non- denominational crowd. I attend whatever church I am able to
(granted it does not do something really crazy, but I haven't experienced that yet).

Roman Catholicism is Apostate.

To the topic of the question, there are bigger issues before the question of denomination were to be relevant.

EDIT:
In the event that the question of denomination were to be relevant, it would depend on the denomination.

I agree :D
Currently we go to a Baptist church, not because its Baptist but because we've grown to really love the church community and the preaching of the Pastor (despite them being annoyingly short sermons).
When we move back to Vancouver, we will be going back to my husbands church (a Mennonite Brethren church) which he was a youth leader at before he left to move here to New Zealand. Ive only attended one service and it was ok (different), there are particulars of the Mennonite values I don't support like pacifism and they don't support voting (which I personally do value), but their roots are still Anabaptist which I support. For my sake, we've agreed to trial his old church for 6 months when we move back and if Im truly uncomfortable with anything we will go elsewhere.

But really what Im looking for is a church community who clearly love Jesus and the bible first and foremost. The rest of it is negotiable.
