Let me break it down like this: (because there are many answers)

1: Mankind is separated from God because of sin: A: God is Holy B: Man has sinned, separating him from God.
2: Sin becomes a debt.
3: Mankind is a finite being who has wronged an infinite being - we have therefore racked up an infinite debt.
4: Paying for this debt requires your life to be surrendered - (you die) - but even that isn't good enough because your life - (which is in the blood) - is still finite.
5: Only an infinite being could pay the price - Yahoshua - (Jesus) - who is God Himself in the flesh.
6: He paid that price by offering His perfect, sinless, infinite life - (blood) - to pay for your infinite debt.
7: In order to claim this you must believe it.

That's just one answer - but it's probably the one that is easist to explain.

Christ paid for all of man's sins on the cross. Because of his self-sacrifice, we can now be forgiven of our sins through him because God has given him all authority to judge (John 5:22). Before his death, the jews covered their sins by sacrificing unblemished animals on altars to God. Jesus became for us the living sacrifice to redeem us from all sins.

What does christ death on the cross mean?
It means this, to free us from eternal death by sin. Sin leads to death without Jesus. We became before the Father's eyes the righteousness of Jesus and Jesus became our sin so that we may enter into eternal life with Him. Jesus died so we may be free from sin. Jesus died for all mankind, not one cannot be blocked from salvation. When Jesus died on the cross it showed this was the sacrifice for all sins of the man who comes to Christ. Anyone is able to recieve this gift of Salvation. Grace and mercy from the Father came down to us once Jesus did what He had to do. Jesus ressurected as well to conquer death.

In Christ

What does christ death on the cross mean?
In the beginning God created Adam and Eve

At this point in human history, there was a relationship between man and God.

But Adam disobeyed God and the wage or consequence of the sin is death for all mankind (Romans 5:12-17).

After the fall of Adam, man has turned away from God (Romans 3:11-12).

So God chose a man called Abraham and promised him that he would be a leader of a great nation. A nation guided by Him.

At a certain moment in history, this nation of God began to disobey him. So God created the Law. Those who obeyed all his statutes would be saved. But no one obeyed the law because of sin in their hearts.

Throughout this period, there was a symbolic ceremony in which the priests sacrificed thousands of lambs to God to symbolize the forgiveness of sins.

But those lambs could never take away sin (Hebrews 10:1) because they were symbolic.

Nevertheless, from eternity God had a plan to take away the sin of man.

He sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for sinners. Christ is the true Lamb. The Lamb is God!

All lambs were insufficient to draw even a single sin . But Christ is the Lamb of God, all-sufficient, which effectively took away all the sins of the world, who were put on him by divine imputation on the cross of Calvary. (Hebrews 9:26).

Thus, personal faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord is the only way by which man can be saved. (Romans 4:23-25, 10:8-13).
