The smilies are nuanced, and can mean a number of different things, though generally understood and accepted as adding a bit of levity and good natured nudge to any post Even the tongue sticking out is not nasty in any way to me. It can express exasperation as well as good natured see-what-I-mean type of nudge. Sometimes adding a smile can unnerve the other, if you say something really cutting and then grin. I do that. I don't mince words but rarely get angry even though people misinterpret my candour and cutting to the chase to their way of thinking, perhaps deliberately in attempts to provoke me. So I have my say and smile
