Hi everyone,

I'm new to the website and have a question that I have been confused about. I love to read and love to read a lot of genres, including romantic fiction. I'm wondering though whether its a sin or not to actually read romantic fiction since the couple in the book that I'm reading are not married and are having sex. So, my question is, should I stop reading it and is it a sin to read this? I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but I am genuinely confused. I am a born again Christian and am trying to understand more about the scriptures.

Its fiction dear im sure its not a sin if it is then me playing video games where I shoot 3d people would be a sin. Though I can imagine people saying it will tempt you to have sex but that's alias of rubbish again with the video game example I don't feel the need to go out and kill people so I say your aboustly fine

If it fills you with lust / you read them because of that content it is. If you dont, maybe not. However, what is more important is what God is telling you. If you feel it is bad, you should not do it, regardless of what people here say.

You have to ask yourself; 'why would I watch this if I know the actions in it are sinful and why would I find sin amusing?' I mean it might have a good story line or whatever but the fact is that the relationship your reading about is not one faced toward God and will just make the unpure relationships you see everywhere seem more and more normal. If they begin seeming normal and right than you will be losing your sensitivity to the Love between a man and a women the way God wants you to see it and understand it, the way he has created it to be.

Video games may no seem like much and may not give you an urge to kill but seeing death and murder over and over, even if they are just 3D models, and have it be celebrated and justified because they were the "enemy" will just dull your empathy to other human's lives and might lead you to think that some killings are justified in front of God when they are really at all.

Well, if it were a movie and these scenes were being acted out in front of you would you feel comfortable watching it?

I worked at a book store for a few years. I thumbed through a number of those 'romance' novels. Many of them were not much more than soft core porn stories, and not much romance.

Also something to consider, if you are reading some that do have more 'romance', is you need to be careful not to let this fake, secular concept of romance influence your thinking. Many women who read these novels develop unhealthy expectations on men and romance.

So while no one can really say if its a sin or not. There are enough things about it to make it something you really need to reconsider. And if you're conscience is already poking at you, that may be your answer.

If they lead you to conduct yourself inappropriately, you might wanna put them down.
Otherwise...

They're just books. Read and enjoy.

I would STRONGLY advise against reading such novels. At the very least, they cheapen sex and make nothing more than a carnal act between two people with no lifetime commitment to each other. Sex isn't "wrong", God invented it, but it has to be kept in it's proper place- marriage. Filling your mind with stuff like that isn't healthy, it will change your perceptions, whether you realize it or not. Flee from it!

Thank you everyone for the replies that I have gotten. Well, I am very pure, and am saving myself for marriage. So,whenever I am reading these stories, I don't really let the actions in the books effect my thoughts since I know that the actions in the novels aren't something to think highly of. Even though the story line is good though, my consciious doesn't feel right whenever I read these type of novels so I think I will switch to reading something else instead. :)

To be straight forward. Yes, it is a sin... well it can be if you enjoy it. Also guard your eyes and ears.
Reading that is just as bad as watching porn. If you find pleasure in readin it , it's wrong. If you don't find pleasure in reading it.. then why read it?(PLENTY of books in the world ) :)

I hope i answered your question.
God Bless! <3

There are lines of Christian romance novels, Rachel, and you may be able to get them from your library; mine has some, I know. I'd recommend googling it to find them; I don't have time for much reading, so I haven't read any of them myself, and therefore don't want to recommend specific titles. I'm glad that you're choosing to read something more wholesome than the sexual books; it's so much easier to desire what God wants for us when we choose healthy things and ask Him to as big a part of our lives as possible :).
